ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT - CALLS FOR MEASURES TO END 'UNCONTROLLED' PHOTOVOLTAIC PARKS ON AGRICULTURAL AND FOREST LAND

 Filenews 11 February 2026

Measures to end the "uncontrolled installation" of photovoltaic parks on agricultural and forest land, the Environmental Movement of Cyprus is calling for in a statement.

"The destruction of forests, the reservation of fertile or highly productive agricultural land and the use of state land and forests for commercial RES projects are considered unacceptable practices, especially when there are suitable alternatives to barren or already built areas on top of buildings," it says.

The Movement adds that "unfortunately, in Cyprus, the interweaving of interests and corruption seem to have been largely institutionalized, which raises reasonable questions among citizens about the role and responsibilities of the government."

He further states that the policy of allocating large areas of state carpet agricultural and forest land for the construction of commercial photovoltaic parks is "incomprehensible". He also characterizes as "scandalous" the case of the construction of a photovoltaic park by the Church in a forest area in Flasou. Elsewhere in the announcement it is stated that "the systematic invocation of 'agrivoltaics' as a pretext for the installation of large photovoltaic parks on agricultural land is condemnable".

The announcement of the Cyprus Environmental Movement underlines "the need for clear spatial boundaries, strict control of actual agricultural use, protection of agricultural land of high natural value, Natura areas and biodiversity, as well as priority for degraded or non-productive land".
