EAC - WARNINGOF FRAUD WITH CHARGES FOR SMALL METERS

 Filenews 18 February 2026

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus warns the public about fraud concerning alleged charges for the installation of smart electricity meters, clarifying that it never asks for money from citizens to replace conventional meters, as the relevant cost is covered by itself and by European funds of the Recovery and Resilience Fund.

According to an EAC announcement, fraudsters sent misleading messages to tenants of an apartment building, demanding the payment of large sums of money to a private electrician for the installation of smart meters, a practice that the Authority characterizes as absolutely false.

The EAC emphasizes that electricity meters belong to the Distribution System Owner and are installed, maintained or replaced exclusively by the EAC, without any financial burden for consumers. At the same time, it is clarified that the work is not assigned to private electricians.

As mentioned, the mass meter replacement areas are announced in advance in the media at regular intervals, while the relevant schedule is posted on the EAC website. Tenants are informed at least 24 hours before the scheduled replacement.

The Authority also notes that EAC staff arrive at the premises in official vehicles bearing the Authority's insignia and have an ID card, which the public can and should request for security reasons.

Finally, it is pointed out that the messages sent by EAC officials do not include amounts of money or payment methods, calling on the public to be especially careful and report suspicious cases.
