DISAPPEARANCE OF EXPLOSIVES

Filenews 17 February 2026 - by Andreas Pogiatzis

The testimonies and the investigative work of the disciplinary investigation of Brigadier General Alkis Alkiviadis, regarding the case of the disappearance/theft of 13.6 kg of explosive mixture of the National Guard during a training activity at the Kalo Chorio firing range in Larnaca, on January 19, have been completed.

Although Alcibiades' name was included in the list of senior officers who retired in the previous days, the completion of the ongoing project is not affected. The drafting of the relevant report will continue and be completed in the time set by the Minister of Defense by another senior officer, who, after the latest crises, remains in active service in the National Guard.

The recent crises of senior officers led to the retirement of Mr. Alkiviadis, who held the rank of Brigadier General for the last two years. This is a fixed process, which is repeated every March and in the context of which officers who usually complete two years in this rank are led to retirement. This practice is implemented in order to ensure the smooth renewal and the smooth process of promotion of officers in the hierarchy, allowing the promotion of younger executives to higher ranks.

It is worth noting that Mr. Alkiviades was the Assistant Chief of Staff and had assumed duties on issues related to the National Guard in relation to the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, playing a central role in the coordination and preparation of the relevant actions. According to information, these duties are now transferred to the new assistant chief of staff.

As far as the explosives case is concerned, according to information from Filenews, the ongoing disciplinary investigation does not indicate, in the first stage, any indications of expediency for the persons involved in the case to commit a criminal offense. At a later stage, if disciplinary offenses are found, those involved will be called to apologize, while the imposition of any penalties will be decided by a competent disciplinary board. The final word will be given to the Chief of the NGGS, who can either ratify the decision, reduce it, or increase it, depending on the findings of the process.

It is recalled that, in parallel with the disciplinary procedure, an investigation is underway by the Larnaca Police Department, which focuses on the detection of the explosives and the investigation of all the relevant parameters of the case.
