"We are not talking about the custom of lampratzia. We are talking about a phenomenon that, in previous years, was accompanied by delinquent behaviours that have nothing to do with our customs and traditions", said the President of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities Andreas Vyras, after a meeting he had with the Minister of Justice Costas Fytiris.
In the context of the need for a timely and coordinated response to the issue, the Union of Municipalities expresses strong concern about the phenomenon of lampreys during the Easter period, especially what is observed in the weeks leading up to the holidays, it is noted.
The president of the Union of Municipalities further noted that the problem is not limited to the traditional performance of the custom, but concerns a wider situation that begins immediately after Christmas and peaks on Holy Saturday.
Mr. Vyras stated that in many cases the collection of materials in neighbourhoods and municipalities reaches alarming and dangerous dimensions, underlining the need for close cooperation between the Police, the Fire Service and Municipalities, with the aim of preventing delinquency and nuisance and ensuring public safety.
The Union of Municipalities called on all stakeholders to move in a timely and coordinated manner, in order to protect citizens and preserve social cohesion during the festive season.
