DAMS - 11.5 million cubic meters OF WATER IN ONE WEEK - AT 17.2% THE STORED QUANTITY

Filenews 17 February 2026 - by Angelos Nikolaou

Within a week (9-16 February) the total water inflow to the major dams of Cyprus reached 11.5 million cubic meters (ECM), while the water outflow during the same period was 0.8 ECM. As a result, the current stored quantity in the dams has reached 50 ECM (17.2%), compared to 75.4 ECM (25.9%), in the corresponding period last year.

The most significant inflow during the three days was presented by the Armino dam (2.2 ECM) in relation to its capacity (4.3 ECM). From the Arminou dam, water has been transferred to the Kouris dam from 1/10/2025 3.9 ECM. The stored quantity at the Kouris dam was yesterday 16.6 ECM with a capacity of 14.5%. Within the last week, the water inflow to the Kouris dam reached 2.2 ECM, while the outflow in the same period was 0.2 ECM. The water inflow at the Asprokremmos dam was 3 ECM, with the outflow being minimal, while the stored quantity today reaches 9.4 ECM or 18%. At 1 ECM was the inflow of water to the Kannavi dam with the outflow being 0.2 ECM.

None of the six largest dams (Kouris, Asprokremmos, Kannaviou, Kalavasos, Dipotamos, Lefkara) has a significant amount of storage. Today, the largest percentage is presented by the Dipotamos dam with 21.7% and an inflow of 3.3 ECM. Of the six largest dams, the Lefkara dam had the highest occupancy last year with 34.7%, while this year the occupancy at the dam reaches 12%.

From the rains of the weekend, the dam of Klirou and the dam of Pomos have overflowed, which now record 100% occupancy. In the previous days, the Kalopanagiotis dam had also overflowed. The dam of Klirou has a capacity of 2 ECM, that of Pomos 0.86 ECM and that of Kalopanagiotis 0.36 ECM.

It is noted that in the last three days, a total inflow of 9.2 million cubic meters (ECM) of water was recorded. Of this quantity, almost half (4.5 ECM) ended up in the dams of the Southern Pipeline (Kouris, Kalavasos, Lefkara, Dipotamos, Germasogeia, Polemidia, Arminou). This year's inflow until yesterday reached 28.4 ECM, compared to last year's total of 18.6 ECM and the year before last 24.7 ECM.

Despite the fact that we have already exceeded the levels of the last two years, the total occupancy of the dams is only 17.2%, marking a dramatic drop compared to last year's 25.9%.

The influx of January and February (12.6 ECM and 13.5 ECM respectively) shows a clear improvement compared to the extremely dry autumn, but the gap created in previous years is huge. Occupancy remains at historically low levels for most major dams, making rational water management imperative.

It is noted that the data is clearly better than the previous two years, although the total quantities until December were alarming. By December 2025 the inflow was 2.2 ECM, compared to 8.8 ECM in December 2024 and 4.5 ECM in December 2023.

Half of February's rainfall covered in three days

At the same time, almost 50% of the amount of rainfall that fell so far in February occurred during the previous three days, according to preliminary data from the Department of Meteorology. Specifically, the average amount of rainfall amounted to 23.4 mm, increasing the average amount of rainfall, which occurred from 1-15 in the free areas of the Republic, to 49.7 mm or 61% of the normal rainfall for the month.

The largest amount of rainfall during the previous three days occurred in Platania, of 67.8 mm, followed by Prodromos with 63.2 mm and Saittas with 48 mm.

It is noted that Prodromos also recorded the highest amount of rainfall in the first 15 days of February with 156.8 mm, which corresponds to 108% of normal.

They are followed by Platania with 139 mm, which corresponds to 94% of the normal for the month of February, Pano Panagia with 103.5 mm which corresponds to 90% of the normal, Saittas with 100.6 mm which corresponds to 90% of the normal for the month and Stavros tis Psokas with 98.8 mm which corresponds to 73% of the normal.
