The death toll from this season’s influenza outbreak has risen to 26, as the Ministry of Health warned of a potential new wave of infections expected to hit the country in March.
State hospitals are currently operating at over 90 per cent occupancy, with dozens of patients undergoing treatment for severe complications linked to a specific viral subtype known as “K.” This strain has drawn international scientific interest after appearing across Europe two weeks earlier than in previous years.
Despite the high fatality count, health officials noted that the peak of the community spread persists, prompting urgent calls for the protection of vulnerable groups and the elderly.
