Two persons, aged 49 and 25, were arrested yesterday by the Police, to facilitate investigations into a case of theft by trick, committed in the province of Nicosia.
The case was reported to the Police on January 31, 2026 by a resident of the Nicosia district. According to the complainant, in the afternoon of the same day, he was contacted, by phone, by an unknown person, who presented himself to him as a technician of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. The unknown person allegedly told the complainant that the purpose of his communication with him was to check the voltage of the electricity of his house.
Under the pretext that the jewellery that the complainant had at home could affect the result of the measurement or even cause more damage, the alleged technician asked the complainant to collect his jewellery, place it in a bowl and place it on the street outside his house. Subsequently, according to the instructions of the "technician", the complainant would have to return home, in order to continue the check.
The complainant followed the instructions and after five minutes, when he went out to check the gold, he found that it had been stolen.
From the Police examinations, testimony was obtained against two persons, aged 49 and 25. Arrest warrants were issued against them, under which they were arrested to facilitate investigations.
Today the two arrested were brought before the Nicosia District Court, which issued an eight-day detention order against them.

Three people were taken to Nicosia General Hospital in the early hours of this morning, after a road collision occurred on the highway.
Specifically, a patrol vehicle in which two members of the Police were riding, was in the safety lane, on the Limassol - Nicosia highway next to the GSP, for the purposes of road checks and prevention of traffic collisions, when under circumstances that are being investigated, a truck crashed into the back of the police vehicle.
Both the two members of the Police and the driver of the truck were injured and taken to the Nicosia General Hospital, where they are undergoing examinations.

A fierce chase took place in Larnaca on the afternoon of Saturday 07/02, in which shots were fired with the Police proceeding to arrest a wanted person.
According to information from the Police, the Larnaca OPE, after receiving information, located a stolen vehicle in Livadia, in which the 27-year-old Greek Cypriot, who was wanted, was riding.
Subsequently, the suspect and after noticing the Police, collided with a patrol car in his attempt to escape. The members of the Police started chasing the suspect, while they also fired shots at the tires of the vehicle, managing to immobilize him and arrest him.
During his arrest, the 27-year-old resisted. This is a wanted person who has been of concern to the authorities in the past. The 27-year-old is suspected of attempted theft, illegal possession of property, reckless and dangerous driving, failure to comply with a police signal and driving a vehicle without registration plates, committed on 28/12/2025, in Aradipou.
The 27-year-old is expected to be brought before a Court tomorrow.

The Police arrested five people for different serious offenses, including beatings and traffic violations, yesterday along with the seizure of 12 vehicles.
The presence and action of the Police last night was intense, throughout Cyprus, with organized patrols in key points of urban areas, with the aim of preventing serious criminal acts, ensuring public order and increasing the sense of security of the public.
As a result of the preventive policing operations, five persons were arrested for various offenses such as causing grievous bodily harm, illegal possession of property, warrants for theft cases and driving under the influence of alcohol.
As part of these operations, during the night, 910 drivers and passengers were stopped and checked.
At the same time, 16 inspections of premises were carried out, with the aim of dealing with phenomena of delinquency.
During traffic checks carried out, 214 complaints were made, concerning various traffic violations, while 13 investigated cases of traffic violations also emerged.
Of the complaints made, the 26 complaints of drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol stand out. As part of the police examinations, 12 vehicles were detained.
Coordinated policing operations, for the prevention and suppression of crime, continue daily, with an increased/enhanced police presence, targeted controls and immediate operational action, with the aim of increasing the sense of security of citizens/protecting citizens and ensuring public order.

An autopsy was performed on the body of the 63-year-old Greek Cypriot lifer, who was found dead on Friday in his cell in the Central Prison.
Although initially the Prison Department officially announced that the death of the convict was caused by a heart attack, the legal autopsy showed that his death was caused by suffocation as a result of obstruction of the respiratory tract with food.
The medical examiner, Nikolas Charalambous, performed the autopsy.
It is recalled that the 63-year-old Cypriot lifer was found yesterday around 15:55 in his cell by a member of the staff of the Central Prisons, without obvious vital signs.
According to the Prison Department, the Medical Services were immediately activated, who came to the scene and provided first aid, while at the same time an ambulance was called. The prisoner was taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of the General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Prison Department immediately informed the Nicosia Police Department, while the family of the deceased was immediately informed.

Tension occurred on Saturday morning in Kalogeropouleio, during an academy match between Aris and Apollon, when a verbal confrontation turned into an incident, resulting in the injury of a coach.
According to preliminary information from the Police, on Saturday morning (7/2) an academy match between Aris and Apollon was taking place in Kalogeropouleio. During the game, the coach of Aris reportedly addressed a comment to players of the opposing team.
Parents of Apollon players then got into a verbal confrontation with the coach and, according to testimonies, one of them pushed him, causing him to fall to the ground.
The coach was taken to a private hospital, where he was found to have a broken collarbone and was kept for treatment. The incident is being investigated by the Police, whose members started taking statements.
As part of the investigation of the case, a 41-year-old father who allegedly attacked an Aris coach was arrested.
The Cyprus Football Federation also issued a statement about the incident, which states that it is already in the process of investigating the incident. See the announcement:
Regarding an incident of violence that took place on Saturday morning in Limassol, in a children's championship match, with a coach as the victim, the Cyprus Football Federation unequivocally condemns any form of violence. Such behaviour is absolutely unacceptable, especially when it occurs in competitions involving children, and has no place in football.
The KOP is already in the process of investigating the incident, with the aim of fully verifying the facts. Any offences falling within the competence of the police authorities are expected to be duly investigated.
It is reminded that, due to the large number of matches in the children's championships and the objective inability to have a doctor present at each match, the events are held in the presence of certified First Assistants. Since the beginning of this season, the duties of First Assistants have been performed by the coaches of the teams, who have received relevant training in the context of cooperation with the Ministry of Health.
Apollon also issued a statement about the incident.

The incident is being investigated through reports from parents and our academy officials.
We remind you that coaches and parents must be role models of proper behaviour and therefore similar phenomena cannot be tolerated.

Authorities handcuffed two more persons in connection with a drug case in Larnaca. The day before yesterday, there was an episodic operation during which one of the suspects crashed a vehicle into a patrol car, injuring two police officers.
It is recalled that after evaluating information, members of YKAN located and signalled a car driven by a 23-year-old, in the area of Larnaca, to stop for a check. In the same area, near the vehicle in question, there was a 22-year-old pedestrian, who was arrested.
However, in the attempt of the members of the Police to stop the 23-year-old for a check, he managed to escape, after repeatedly colliding with official vehicles.
In a search carried out in the area, a nylon package containing about a kilogram of cannabis was located and confiscated.
As part of the investigation of the case of possession of drugs (one kilogram of cannabis), the Police proceeded yesterday on the basis of court warrants to arrest two more persons.
They are a 23-year-old and a 19-year-old woman, who were brought before the Larnaca District Court today, which issued a seven-day detention order.
It is noted that another 22-year-old person is under eight-day detention for the same case.

The investigations of the TAE Larnaca are intensive, after the revelation of a large number of videos with the degrading torture of seven people in an office-hellhole, located on the first floor of a casino in Pyla.
The content of the videos is shocking and illuminates another dark and heinous aspect of the action of organized crime in Larnaca. The videos were located on the mobile phone of a 48-year-old indictment, with Cypriot citizenship, who was indicted, along with four other foreigners, to trial for the unprecedented incident of shooting in the center of Larnaca on January 17.
This is a person with a heavy criminal past, who is also accused of beating a citizen in Pyla, a few hours before the shooting. A 27-year-old man from Palestine is also in custody for the torture case, while another foreigner who was allegedly involved in the Larnaca incident is wanted.
According to information from filenews, so far three of the seven persons who can be seen in the videos being tortured have been identified, while tests are being carried out to locate the remaining four. All of them, according to what was said yesterday before the court where the suspects were taken, were brutally tortured either to pay money or to confess to involvement in alleged criminal actions against the 48-year-old. It is noted that several months ago, unknown persons had set fire to the vehicle of the 48-year-old undertrial, while he claims that there was a plan to murder him.

Loaded with 27 boxes of smuggled cigarettes and 25 liters of dairy, a man was found at the Agios Domoetios roadblock, who was fined more than €1.7000.
In a statement, the Customs Department states that on 7/2/2026 its officers at the Agios Dometios crossing point, as part of the usual checks of persons and vehicles passing through the occupied to the free areas, selected for control a vehicle driven by a person with Romanian citizenship.
During the inspection carried out in the vehicle, it was found that he was carrying 27 boxes of 200 cigarettes each, which did not bear markings for the harmful to health in the Greek and Turkish languages, an indication that they are duty-free, as well as 25 liters of dairy drink (kefir), in violation of the Green Line Regulation regarding the explicit prohibition of the transport of animal products.
The person involved was arrested for flagrante delicto, while the goods in question and the vehicle were confiscated. He was later released, after his proposal for an out-of-court settlement of the offenses with the payment of an amount of €1,700 plus €300 for the return of the vehicle was accepted.

A 39-year-old man from Limassol was hospitalised with a fractured skull, a fractured rib, and other serious injuries after having been issued threats by his landlord, the police said on Saturday.
The police said the incident took place on Thursday evening, with the man’s two housemates, aged 41 and 23 years old, having reported that their landlord had visited their house and “threatened them”.
Shortly after, the two men said, the owner returned to the house, accompanied by other people, whose faces were covered.
They said that at this point, they had fled the building, and that the men with covered faces had chased them, before catching up to both the 41-year-old and the 39-year-old and attacking them.
The 39-year-old was then taken to a private hospital in Limassol, while the 41-year-old and the 23-year-old returned to the house to find that €3,000 in cash had been stolen from it.
Police investigations in the matter led them to arrest a 29-year-old man on Friday. It is expected that he will appear in court later on Saturday.

Authorities in Cyprus have carried out a series of seizures of e-cigarette liquids containing illegal narcotics and new psychoactive substances, following participation in the international operation “eVAPER8” coordinated by the United Nations. Preliminary analysis by the Government Chemist has found some of the substances to be particularly hazardous to human health.
The nationwide operation, which ran from November 23 to December 21, 2025, involved the Customs and Excise Department, the Cyprus Police, the Pharmaceutical Services, the Health Services, and the Government Chemist. Inspections were carried out on imported goods from third countries and in retail outlets in Nicosia, Paphos, and Paralimni.
In Nicosia, customs agents confiscated 85 e-cigarette liquid products, while the anti-narcotics unit seized 269 packages containing cannabis or THC. Similar seizures were made in Paphos and Paralimni, with hundreds of products found to contain cannabis, THC, and CBD products without the required licenses. Many of the products were marked as originating from other European countries, including Greece.
Authorities expressed serious concern over the circulation of such products, particularly among young people, highlighting recent incidents of fainting and loss of consciousness among students. They called for urgent measures to restrict access and stricter scrutiny of outlets selling cannabinoid products.
Authorities have called for tighter regulation and closer monitoring of outlets selling e-cigarette liquids and cannabinoid products to protect public health.
