XYLOFAGOU QUARRIES - FIRING RANGE OF BRITISH BASES BLOCKED - PROTEST AT SEA BY FISHERMEN

Filenews 19 January 2026 - by Natasha Christoforou

After the negative response they received from the British Bases for the expansion of the Xylofagou quarry zone, the companies that manage the quarries in the area blocked the BB firing range.

Professional fishermen are also participating in the protest by sea with boats, who believe that the operation of the Xylofagou shooting range drastically reduces their income. The protesters say that their protest will last indefinitely and until the British Bases reconsider their request for the expansion of the Xylofagou quarry zone. That is why they blocked all access to the firing range to prevent any activities of the British Bases.

As they report, they were officially informed on January 16, 2026 at a meeting of the president of the Pancyprian Quarry Association, Antonis Latouros with the Department of Environment of the British Bases, who stated that permission to expand the quarries cannot be granted as studies are needed, which, as they say, is not the case.
