THE RARE 'MERMAID' BAT EURYALE RETURNS TO TROODOS

 Pafos Press 20 January 2026

Particularly encouraging data on the biodiversity of Cyprus emerges from a recent winter bat census carried out by the Cyprus Forestry Department in the Troodos National Forest Park. During the survey, a large group of the rare, for Cypriot standards, bat species Rhinolophus euryale was identified, which sends optimistic messages for its survival on the island.

The census confirms, once again, the decisive role played by the Troodos National Forest Park as a wintering ground for various species of bats. At the same time, it highlights the need for strict protection of their natural refuges, which are particularly vulnerable to human intervention and disturbance.

One of the rarest species in Europe

The Rhinolophus euryale is one of the rarest cave bat species in Europe and is one of the rarest species of the Cypriot fauna. Its populations are strongly affected by habitat loss and disturbance of its living spaces. It feeds mainly in forest and rural landscapes, hunting moths, while thanks to its specialized flight it can also move in dense forest vegetation.

Ecological quality indicator

Scientists consider this species to be an important indicator of ecological quality, as its presence is directly linked to healthy ecosystems. According to the IUCN, it is classified as “Near Threatened”, while it is strictly protected by the European Directive 92/43/EEC (Annexes II and IV).

Mythological reference in the name

It is noteworthy that the name euryale comes from Euryale of Greek mythology, one of the Gorgons, giving a symbolic character to a species that remains rare and valuable for the natural heritage of Cyprus.
