TAXI DRIVERS - ON INDEFINITE STRIKE FROM 27 JANUARY IF NO MEASURES TAKEN

Filenews 21 January 2026 - by Dora Christodoulou

Although after yesterday's 24-hour strike mobilization of the Pancyprian Federation of Urban Taxis, no specific measures are taken to solve the problems of the industry, professional taxi drivers will go on an indefinite strike from January 27.

This was announced by the taxi drivers of Paphos who participated in today's mobilization with a gathering place at Paphos airport. The drivers pointed out that the main problem, which now directly threatens the viability of their profession, is piracy. The illegal transport of passengers has taken uncontrollable proportions, they stressed, and today the phenomenon has literally grown, while until a few years ago it was sporadic in Paphos and more broadly on the island.

The striking taxi drivers also speak of violations of the seats, which also affect legal professionals, as they report.

Industry representatives operating at Paphos Airport pointed out that the problems they face are common to their colleagues at Larnaca Airport and complained that intercity taxis are also illegally operating on urban routes within cities, as well as rural taxis, magnifying the problem that pirates are already creating in the industry. As a result of this war they are receiving, as they mentioned, it is the increasingly common phenomenon of being forced to wait up to a full 24 hours to pick up a customer.

Taxi drivers at Paphos Airport also called on the Ministry of Transport to honour Mr. Vafeadis' commitments a few months ago during his on-site visit, to facilitate professional taxi drivers stationed at Paphos Airport to pick up customers.
