Fish stocks are dwindling and some species of fish are on the verge of extinction in our country, according to the professional fishermen of Paphos, who emphasize that the traditional profession of fisherman is now in danger of disappearing.
Among the reasons for this situation, they point out, are new technology, overfishing, marine pollution and illegal fishing.
However, the problems faced by professional fishermen in Paphos, they noted, are greater than in the other provinces. Indicatively, they refer to the hours imposed on them in order to have free access to the port of Kato Paphos to fish, which drastically restricts them as they estimate.
Professional fishermen face a problem with parking as well as a housing problem for the needs of their Association, they also point out, stressing that it is imperative to upgrade the entry and exit of boats from the "mouth" of the port and to create space for the sale of fresh fish directly to the consumer.
They have submitted their requests to the competent bodies for years, but nothing has been done so far, industry representatives point out.
