SIX MAJOR PROJECTS OVER €500 million START IN LARNACA, LIVADIA AND VOROKLINI

 Filenews 29 January 2026

A total of six development projects with a total cost estimated at around €50 million, are expected to start within the year in Larnaca and in the Municipal Districts of Livadia and Voroklini, said Mayor Andreas Vyras.

"In 2026, the execution of six projects will begin with an estimated cost of more than €50 million. The largest project is the "Priority Projects of the Larnaca Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) - Implementation of Bus Lanes and Bicycle Lanes", which provides for the construction of bus lanes and bicycle lanes, with its budget amounting to around €20 million", he said.

As he explained, "the proposed design aims to contribute to the implementation of the vision of promoting sustainable mobility with multiplier benefits for the society of Larnaca".

He added that the project provides for the qualitative upgrade of more than 15 main Avenues and streets of Larnaca for the creation of 30 kilometers of bicycle lanes and 11 kilometers of bus lanes. "The plans aim to rearrange existing cross-sections and include, among other things, one-way streets, reduction of vehicle lanes on main avenues, tree planting (creation of green axes), road surface reconstruction and sidewalk completion," he said.

The project, he continued, "is part of the immediate priority actions for the promotion of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) and the Contracting Authority is the Department of Public Works".

Within the year, Mr. Vyras added, "the project for the "School of Marine Sciences and Sustainable Development of CUT" is expected to begin, at a cost of €13 million. The project concerns the construction of building facilities for the School of "Marine Sciences, Technology and Sustainable Development" of the CUT in Larnaca, on a plot near the parking lot in the Mackenzie area, with the aim of housing the educational and research function of the School.

The spaces, he continued, "will include, among others, auditoriums, classrooms, meeting/meeting rooms, staff and student offices, specialized laboratories, as well as advanced IT infrastructure and distance learning support. The size of the building facilities amounts to 4,960 sq.m. of closed and covered spaces."

Also, said the Mayor of Larnaca "with a cost estimated at €3.6 million, the "Redevelopment of Archbishop Makarios III Avenue in Livadia" will begin within the year. The project, which is an urban plan, includes new paving on a road and sidewalk with cobblestones, planting, undergrounding of public utility services, replacement of the water supply network, construction of a rainwater and sewerage system, works on the fencing and courtyard of the churches, creation of parking spaces and the addition of appropriate urban equipment and lighting."

As Andreas Vyras said, in 2026 it is estimated that the project "Restoration/Revitalization of the old neighbourhood in Voroklini - Final Phase" will begin. "With the proposed regulations, they will turn the road network of the historic core of Voroklini into a co-level communal area for the circulation of all users, including the disabled," he said.

He also explained that "people with disabilities will be able to move more safely and with better operating conditions within the framework of European standards (SHARE SPACE) where conditions due to limited width cannot allow separate and distinct routes for all users".

The project, he noted, "at a cost of €2.4 million, includes new paving of the road and pavement with cobblestones, planting, undergrounding of public utilities and the addition of appropriate urban equipment and lighting.

The long-awaited "Regeneration of the Parish of St. John" in Larnaca, said Andreas Vyras, "will also begin within the year and is estimated to cost around €2.3 million. The project is urban planning and concerns the regeneration / improvement and reconstruction of the existing road network, with the widening of the existing sidewalks and the upgrading of the public space".

The goal, he noted, "is to create conditions for sustainable mobility. The design provides for the creation of a central square and plateaus, the reconstruction of the road surfaces on adjacent roads and sidewalks, the revision of road signs, the improvement of accessibility and the enrichment of the greenery with new tree plantings."

He also stated that "the design looks forward to highlighting the architectural, urban planning, historical, social and environmental value of the area of Agios Ioannis".

Asked about the issue of housing the Services of the Municipality of Larnaca in the area of the old Larnaca Hospital, a project that has been discussed for years, Mr. Vyras said that "this project is also expected to start within 2026 with an estimated cost of around €9 million". Specifically, the project "Housing of the Services of the Municipality of Larnaca in the area of the Old Larnaca Hospital" concerns the restoration/maintenance and configuration of an existing listed and non-listed building, the demolition of non-listed buildings and the completion with new constructions/buildings, so that in their entirety the Services of the Municipality of Larnaca can be housed in the area of the old Larnaca Hospital, he noted.

The project, the Mayor concluded, "includes the configuration/landscaping of the outdoor spaces surrounding the buildings and the creation of a Square, a Planting Area/Greenery on the south side of the building and a parking area on the north side".
