LARNACA AIRPORT - WORK STOPPAGE OF TAXI DRIVERS UNDERWAY - FURTHER ACTION 20 & 28 JANUARY [both 24 hour strikes]

Filenews 13 January 2026 - by Natasha Christoforou

The warning work stoppage of Larnaca taxi drivers, which is taking place at Larnaca airport, has been underway since 7 am on Tuesday.

The work stoppage will end at 11 a.m., however, the taxi drivers are announcing that if their demands are not met, then on Tuesday, January 20, they will go on a 24-hour strike, which they will repeat on Tuesday, January 28.

The professionals are asking for more policing at Larnaca airport, where lawlessness prevails, as they say, due to the transport of passengers in private vehicles mobilized by the various applications. Larnaca taxi drivers had meetings with the relevant state services, but were not satisfied with their results. "They gave us promises but nothing has happened so far. This story goes back 7 years and we will not back down if we do not see solutions," said their spokesman Giorgos Makris, indicating that lawlessness prevails, because there is insufficient control, at Larnaca airport. "There is a plethora of applications for Larnaca airport, for which we are not against. However, most of them also work with illegal private vehicles at a rate of 30%-40%. None of the applications respects the laws and decisions of the institutions of the Republic of Cyprus. We need policing and the state by our side. Larnaca airport must stop being a center of lawlessness," he added.

Larnaca taxi drivers speak of an out-of-control situation and raise the issue of their professional survival. Specifically, they demand "complete disconnection of the signal and activity of all applications from Larnaca airport except for the province where the Road Use Permit is (outside Larnaca) and strict and universal observance of the taxi seat from all applications, without exceptions, loopholes or interpretations as they see fit".

The Pancyprian Urban Taxi Guild (POAT) also expressed its support for the taxi drivers of Larnaca yesterday through an announcement, noting that it requires policing as well as the permanent presence of a supervisor at the Airports. It also indicates that it will convene extraordinarily at the weekend, if substantial measures are not announced, in order to decide on dynamic pan-Cypriot mobilizations.
