HALF OF THE BUSINESSES IN CYPRUS USE CLOUD COMPUTING

Filenews 19 January 2026 - by Theano Thiopoulou

Just over 50% of businesses in Cyprus used paid cloud computing services (known as cloud computing) in 2025, mainly for email, office software, and file storage. Data published by Eurostat show that the share in 2025 fell to 51.38% from 52.93% in 2023, while in businesses in the EU the share increased by 7.42 percentage points in 2025.

This indicates the preference of large enterprises for cloud technologies, possibly due to the greater ability to invest in advanced technologies and the need for more complex and scalable IT solutions. The share of businesses using paid cloud computing services was particularly high among large enterprises, where 84.67% reported purchasing such services in 2025, an increase of 6.9 percentage points compared to 2023. In 2025, 66.78% of medium-sized enterprises used purchased cloud computing services compared to 59.09% in 2023. Among small businesses, the share of businesses using paid cloud computing services increased over the same period by 7.48 percentage points to 49.3%

Eurostat in its explanation notes that businesses, essentially, instead of building or expanding their own IT infrastructure (which will include hardware, the development and maintenance of software applications and databases), can access computing resources hosted by third parties on the internet (the "cloud"). From a technological perspective, cloud computing is a model that provides businesses everywhere with flexible, on-demand internet-based access to a pool of configurable computing resources, including servers, databases, software applications, storage capacity, and computing power.

Significant differences are observed between countries. In Finland (79.21%), Italy (75.6%), Malta (74.87%), Ireland (73.04%) and Sweden (72%), at least 70% of businesses used paid cloud computing services. On the other hand, in Romania (24.94%), Greece (24.33%) and Bulgaria (17.83%), less than 25% of businesses did so. Among businesses that reported using paid cloud computing, about 85.15% relied on a cloud solution for their email. Instead of setting up a server infrastructure for their email system, these businesses opted for a cloud solution.

As expected, the highest percentage of businesses using paid cloud computing services (82.92%) was recorded in the information and communications sector, while in almost all other economic sectors the percentage was below 65% and ranged from 39.52% to 62.11%. "Professional, scientific and technical" businesses rank in between, with 67.39% of businesses reporting that they purchase cloud services.
