The criminalization of mobile phones in the Central Prisons with the introduction of severe penalties was approved by the Plenary Session of the Parliament.
Specifically, the Parliament approved the amendment of the Prisons Law, in order to prohibit the possession, use, import and export of mobile phones and prohibited objects or substances in or from prisons, as well as the attempt to commit these acts.
In particular, the new regulations establish the following offenses:
- The possession, use, import and export of mobile phones in or from prisons, as well as the attempt to commit them by a person, prisoner or not, with a prescribed prison sentence not exceeding two (2) years and/or a fine not exceeding six thousand euros (€6,000).
- The possession, use, import and export of prohibited items in or from prisons, as well as the attempt to commit them by a person, prisoner or not, with a prescribed prison sentence not exceeding two (2) years and/or a fine not exceeding six thousand euros (€6,000).
- The commission of the above mentioned offenses by a member of the staff of the Prison Department with a prescribed prison sentence not exceeding three (3) years and/or a fine not exceeding ten thousand euros (€10,000).
