Makis Keravnos is going to Brussels tomorrow, Sunday, in order to participate in the meeting of the Eurogroup (Eurogroup) - which will be chaired for the first time by Kyriakos Pierrakakis - and to chair the work of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) on January 19 and 20.
On Monday 19 January, in the framework of the Eurogroup, the Finance Ministers will be briefed on the latest developments in the process of adopting the Euro by Bulgaria, followed by an exchange of views on the economic policy priorities of the Eurozone for 2026, based on the recommendations of the European Commission issued in November. The agenda also includes an update on the results of the recent meetings of the G7 Finance Ministers.
At the same time, France, which holds the presidency of the Eurogroup for 2026, will present its priorities, while there will be a debate on the candidacies for the position of Vice-President of the European Central Bank.
On Tuesday, January 20, Mr. Keravnos will chair the ECOFIN Council, which will begin with an exchange of views on the work programme on economic and financial issues during the Cyprus Presidency, based on a relevant presentation by the Minister of Finance.
Ministers will then discuss the economic and fiscal impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while the revised Recovery and Resilience Plans of Spain, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Finland will be adopted.
In the context of the European Semester 2026, Finance Ministers will adopt Conclusions on the 2026 Vigilance Mechanism Report, which identifies the Member States for which in-depth analyses of macroeconomic imbalances and possible targeted policy interventions are required.
Finally, a decision to open an excessive deficit procedure for Finland is expected to be adopted.
