Filenews 14 January 2026 - by Despina Psyllou

The rains from the low barometric that has been affecting Cyprus in recent days quenched the thirst of the land and gave water to the rivers. In just five days, it dropped 43% of the water corresponding to January, benefiting the dams with inflows, the percentages of which remain at dramatic levels after a prolonged drought.

Particularly worrying, according to data from the Department of Water Development, is the image of Kouris, the largest dam in Cyprus, with a capacity of 115 million cubic meters of water. The dam in question has almost been emptied with only 10.9 million. m², i.e. it is at 9.5% of its capacity, when a year ago it was at 22.1%. After the rains of the four days, 1,134 million tons of oil were stored in the dam. of water.

The sad data are revealed in all the dams, the capacity of which amounts to 290 million cubic meters. However, they currently have only 29.6 million. m² of water, i.e. their occupancy amounts to 10.2%, when last year at this time it was 26.6%.

In the worst position is the dam in Vyzakia, which is actually empty (0.2%), when last year at this time it was at 3%. Equally bad are the data at the dams of Germasogeia (1.2% from 27.7% last year) and Achna (1.8% from 24.8% last year).

On the contrary, the Kalopanagiotis dam is in a better condition in terms of stored water quantities (84.8% from 62.3% last year). In somewhat better condition, but below 50% of their capacity, are Pomos (37.6% from 28% last year), Agia Marina (37.6% from 37.9% last year) and Mavrokolympos (34.3% from 60.4% last year).

Kouris, the largest dam in Cyprus, with a capacity of 115 million. cubic meters of water has almost been emptied, having only 10.9 million. m.m., i.e. it is at 9% of its capacity. A year ago it was at 22.1%.

The dams of the Southern Pipeline (Kouris, Kalavasos, Lefkara, Dipotamos, Germasogeia, Arminou, Polemidia and Achna) with a total capacity of 189.4 million. cubic meters of water are at 10.2%. Last year it was at 25.7% of their capacity.

The Paphos dams (Asprokremmos, Kannaviou and Mavrokolympos) with a capacity of 71.7 million. cubic meters are at 9.4%. Last year it was at 30.1% of their capacity.

The Chrysochous dams (Evretou, Argaka, Pomos, Agia Marina) with a capacity of 26.1 million. cubic meters, are at 12.2%. Last year it was at 24.7%.
