A judicial thriller with political implications, but also Israel being at the center of the case, is underway before the Cypriot Justice and competent services of the Republic.
The central figure is the 36-year-old Israeli Daniel Yehonatan Zarvg, who seeks to be placed under international protection in Cyprus, claiming that he is being maliciously persecuted by the Israeli authorities and claims that he is charged with crimes he did not commit.
The case of the 36-year-old, better known by the name "Andros Gracia" occupied the media last summer. This name was used by the 36-year-old in a fake travel document of Spain while he was in the pseudo-state. He had been located and arrested in the occupied territories, as he was wanted as a suspect in his homeland for a crime committed on 24/3/2024. Then, in a death ambush, nine shots were fired at Shaul Peretz and resulted in the death of his wife, Almog. Daniel Yehonatan Zarvg was arrested in August by the pseudo-police and on 13/8 he was handed over to the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus.
The last episode of the series took place yesterday. The 36-year-old, through his lawyer, Christos Gavrielides, filed an appeal with the Court of International Protection seeking the annulment of a decision of the asylum service, which on December 5 rejected his request to be granted asylum in Cyprus.
The 36-year-old's application filed yesterday is accompanied by several legal points, while it includes references to his homeland, Israel. He claims, among other things, that he settled in the areas not controlled by the Republic of Cyprus at the beginning of 2024 and that "the reason for his departure from Israel is because his life was in serious danger, both from criminal elements who repeatedly attempted to kill him, and from the Israeli authorities who (a) methodically leaked unsubstantiated allegations to the media from time to time allegedly for his involvement in crimes, targeting him in the eyes of criminals, while (b) in the past he was convicted of crimes he did not commit, violating his right to a fair trial resulting in (c) serving various sentences in circumstances constituting torture and/or degrading treatment and/or punishment, due to long periods of solitary confinement, without right and/or with a limited right of court, only with handcuffs and feet. As a result of the isolation, he developed various psychiatric and/or psychotic issues and sleep apnea. He is constantly receiving medication for this purpose, while he needs an oxygen mask to sleep."
The lengthy request to the Court of International Protection is accompanied by multi-page allegations by the 36-year-old, who is presented as the target of criminal acts by Shaul Peretz. He speaks of the placement of an explosive device in his vehicle, the murder of his friend and general incidents that show that he is being targeted by publications and positions of the Israeli Authorities that are not valid and were not taken into account by the Asylum Service of the Republic of Cyprus. He even cites an article in "Fileleftheros" in the summer to show the dimensions that his case has taken in the media.
The following is also claimed: "The Israeli prison system, to which the applicant will be returned in the event of his extradition, is currently in a state of serious functional collapse, characterized by extreme overcrowding of prisoners and meagre shortages of supervisory and prison staff. (…) The authorities have already failed to protect him in the past, he is the victim of violent attacks inside the prisons, he was stabbed both in the head and body and there is a connection to the above events since they may be on the instructions of the said faction (...)".
It should be noted here that Daniel Yehonatan Zarvg lived in the occupied territories with his wife and their four children. He is currently being held in a detention facility that is under the control of the Cyprus Police. His lawyers, Dimitris Tsolakidis and Andreas Andreou, had achieved the annulment of his arrest (certiorari) and on the basis of this they registered an application to release their client and end the process of his extradition to Israel. On 10/12 they spoke about it to the Court, which reserved its decision. The Legal Service has appealed the annulment decree.
