CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 28 January 2026

A coordinated operation was carried out on Wednesday morning (28/1) by the Limassol Police Department, as part of the efforts to deal with organized crime. During the operation, members of various police services searched houses in urban and rural areas of the Limassol district, based on court warrants.

In the first case, electric discharge devices (tasers) were found and confiscated, while small quantities of drugs were found in other houses. During the investigations, arrests and written complaints were made, with the investigations continuing.

According to information from the Police, in the context of activities of the A.D.E. Limassol for the fight against organized crime, on 28/01/2026 and between the hours of 06:30-07:35, members of T.A.E., O.P.E., Rural Stations, Poleos and Oul.A.E. Limassol, with the assistance of members of M.M.A.D., K-9, pyrotechnicians and Y.K.A.N., carried out investigations pursuant to court warrants as follows:

1. A 55-year-old  at a house in a village in mountainous Limassol. Two electric discharge devices (Taser) were found and he was arrested for a flagrante delicto, where he is still under arrest.

The 30-year-old alleged perpetrator of the attempted murder of a 31-year-old man in Larnaca last Friday was remanded in custody by the Larnaca District Court. The 30-year-old, who was wanted and had been classified as dangerous by the Police, was located yesterday in an area of occupied Morphou and handed over, through the Bi-communal Contact Group, to the Larnaca Police Department.

The motives for the attempted murder are attributed to personal differences, since the alleged perpetrator and the victim met through a dating website five months ago and allegedly maintained a relationship, according to what is stated in the detention order filed with the court. The two allegedly argued, for an unknown reason, with the 30-year-old pulling out a knife and allegedly hitting the 31-year-old in the abdomen with it, in the stairwell of an apartment building. The 30-year-old, so far at least, refuses to cooperate with the Police.

The attempted murder was committed last Friday afternoon. The Police were informed shortly after 5 pm that there is an injured person on a city street. Upon arrival, the police found that the victim had a wound to the abdomen. The injured person was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where he underwent surgery and was kept for treatment, with his condition classified as serious.

No traces of blood were found at the place where the victim was found. However, bloody apartment keys were found, which seem to have fallen from the 31-year-old's clothes. The keys led to an apartment rented through the Airbnb platform. A quantity of crystalline substance, with a total gross weight of 6.5 grams, a bottle with traces of crystal substance, a grinder with traces of cannabis, a plastic container with traces of white powder, syringes, two precision scales and the sum of €300, which were received by YKAN, were found in it. No traces were found in the apartment to indicate that the attempted murder was stolen there. However, blood stains were found in the stairwell of the apartment building.

The 30-year-old's vehicle, meanwhile, was found abandoned in a village in Vrysoules and was taken for examinations to ADE Larnaca.

Personal differences seem to have been behind yesterday's clash between foreigners in the area of Agia Zoni, in Limassol, where 12 people, including two women, were arrested. The Police speak of immediate intervention at the scene of the incident, stressing that her presence led to the rapid arrest of those involved.

The intensive controls, as the Assistant Police Director of Limassol, Lefteris Kyriakou, stressed in his statements, are not limited only to foreign persons, but also extend to others who, according to information and testimonies, may be involved in serious cases, with the aim of protecting public safety and preventing violent incidents.

"On 26 January, around 9 o'clock, the Limassol Police Department received information about a fight between foreigners in the area of Agia Zoni. Immediately, patrols in the area went to the scene. Initially, no one was located, but there was evidence in the area that there had been a fight, such as an iron barblood stains and other evidence, which were confiscated," said Mr. Kyriakou.

During the investigations, a nearby apartment was located where 12 people were, who, according to testimonies, had participated in the fight.

"A person from the opposing group was also found in the apartment, who reported that he had been kidnapped and forcibly transferred by the others, where he was beaten. Three of those arrested suffered injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. The rest were taken to the Limassol Police Department for questioning and then arrested on the basis of court warrants. All twelve were brought before the Limassol District Court, for the procedure of their detention," he added.

Preliminarily, as he said, behind the clash, there seem to be personal differences between two opposing teams.

"Four more people who participated in the fight are being sought. From an inspection carried out, it was found that 11 of the arrested are in Cyprus with student status. Upon completion of the examinations, their residence status will be reviewed by the competent services and the file will be submitted to the Legal Service for further action. Among those arrested, one is a European citizen and one comes from a third country," said Mr. Kyriakou.

Regarding the checks that continue in the city, he said that "the campaigns of the Limassol Police Department, but also at a pan-Cypriot level, continue almost every night with specific goals. They do not only concern foreigners, but also other people who, according to information or testimonies, may be involved in serious cases."

Regarding whether yesterday's clash could have been predicted, Mr. Kyriakou stated that "the Police cannot be everywhere, but where there is information, we call on the people to trust the Police and provide evidence. Our response is immediate. There are more patrols and checks will continue. However, we cannot control every neighbourhood at every hour. But as you saw yesterday, the Police immediately went to the scene and made 12 arrests, while the investigations continue and four more people are being sought."

Regarding the fate of the foreigners, he said that upon completion of the examinations, their residence status will be reviewed by the competent services and specific recommendations will be made to the Legal Service. The final word on criminal prosecutions lies with the Legal Service, and as Mr. Kyriakou pointed out, they will proceed there after the procedures are completed and the files are examined.

Update - With bandages on their heads and bloody clothes, some of the suspects in the bloody clash that took place on Monday night in the area of Agia Zoni in Limassol appeared before the Limassol District Court today. As can be seen from the examinations, the cause of the clash seems to have been personal differences between two rival groups of foreigners.

The Court approved the request of the investigators of the TAE Limassol and ordered that all 12 suspects be detained for a period of eight days. Among them are two women. The suspects' claims are contradicted based on testimonies obtained by the Police.

According to information from Filenews, the Police examinations revealed that the 18-year-old (12th suspect) went outside the apartment building where the foreigners live, along with four other compatriots. There they located the 8th suspect, stopped him and after getting out of the vehicle, they attacked him by hitting him with sticks. Other compatriots who live in the same apartment building, as well as in adjacent apartments, rushed to the scene, as a result of which a fight broke out.

The four unknown persons managed to escape in the vehicle, while the 12th suspect was stopped and according to his claims, he was initially hit with sticks on the head and in various parts of his body. He was then forcibly transferred to an apartment, where he was allegedly confined and attacked again until he was located by the Police. In a search of the apartment, two cricket bats were found hidden under a bed, which had blood stains and were taken as evidence.

The medical examinations revealed that the 12th suspect suffered bruises to the head and legs, while the 9th suffered a head bruise and a fracture to the third finger of the left hand. The 8th did not suffer any injuries and, after receiving medical treatment, was discharged.

Interrogated orally, the 12th suspect claimed that before the incident he went with a compatriot to an unknown premises, where they consumed alcohol. According to him, he got drunk and then boarded an unknown person's vehicle, in which his compatriots were still riding, whom he said, he did not know. On the way he fell asleep and, when he woke up, he realized the fight. He got out of the vehicle to separate them, however due to his drunkenness he lost his balance and was hit on the head.

He also stated that he was forcibly taken to the apartment, where he was allegedly attacked by various persons, including two women, claiming that one of them, older, was constantly beating and kicking him, a description that seems to refer to the 11th suspect.

According to the same information, from a testimony held by the Police, some of his claims are contradicted, as it seems that he attacked and tried to immobilize a person who tried to help the 8th suspect while he was being attacked.

After the arrest of the other foreigners, when questioned orally, they denied committing the offenses, claiming that they were in the apartment. These allegations are contradicted by the testimony obtained by the Police, according to which the 1st suspect and the 11th suspect allegedly held aggressive instruments and hit the vehicle of the 12th suspect's accomplices.

To complete the investigations, about 40 more testimonies from neighbours and eyewitnesses are expected to be taken. At the same time, reconnaissance factions are expected. The offenses of conspiracy to commit a felony and a misdemeanor, possession of an offensive instrument, kidnapping, rioting, assault causing actual and serious bodily harm, as well as common assault are being investigated against them.

The Permanent Criminal Court of Larnaca today imposed a six-year prison sentence on a 24-year-old woman, after finding her guilty after a drug trafficking case. The case concerned the importation of a quantity of cocaine with a total gross weight of 890 grams.

The quantity of cocaine was detected last October, as part of the actions taken by the Police, specifically the Anti-Drug Service – YKAN, in cooperation with the Customs Department, in order to identify persons who import narcotic substances into Cyprus.

Specifically, after evaluating information, according to which a woman who was going to arrive in Cyprus on a flight from abroad, hid a quantity of drugs in her body, the 24-year-old, shortly after her arrival at Larnaca airport on October 21, was stopped for a check in the arrivals area of the airport. Packages containing cocaine, with a total gross weight of 540 grams, were found in her possession.

The 24-year-old was arrested for self-inflicted offenses and then underwent medical examinations and radiological examination, as a result of which a number of preparations were found on her body. She was hospitalized, where during her hospitalization she expelled 35 packages of cocaine with a total gross weight of 350 grams. She was discharged on October 28 and remained in custody, under a court order, for the purpose of investigating the case.

Upon completion of the police examinations, the Police proceeded to register the case for trial by the Permanent Criminal Court of Larnaca. This morning, the Permanent Criminal Court sentenced the 24-year-old to six years in prison for the crime of importing drugs.

The case had been investigated by YKAN (Larnaca Provincial Echelon).

A new case of internet fraud, with the extraction of a large amount of money, is being investigated by the Police. The perpetrators, by sending a false message via e-mail, managed to extort a sum of money from a company in Nicosia, more than €120,000.

The case was reported today to the TAE Nicosia, by the Director of the company. According to the complaint, last November, his company received an email that appeared to come from a partner company, based abroad, stating that the partner company had changed bank details. The message stated that payments for the purchase of goods should now be made to a new bank account, the details of which were mentioned in the message.

Following what was stated in the message it had received, the Cypriot company proceeded in the period between December and January 26, to payments of sums of money totalling €123,943, by remittances to the supposedly new bank account, to a bank in another European country. However, when yesterday, January 26, the director of the Cypriot company contacted the partner company, he was told that the partner company had not changed bank accounts, as a result of which the fraud and the extraction of the large amount of money were found.

The Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Nicosia Police Department is investigating the case.

On the occasion of this new fraud case, the Police recommends to the public that, in cases where such messages are received, before any payment of money is made, the message should be verified through telephone communication with the partners to whom the payment is to be made. For this communication, a telephone number should be used with which the two sides have re-contacted or which is indicated in messages exchanged between them in their previous transactions.

Company owners or managers are encouraged to inform their company's staff about this form of fraud and to implement procedures to verify the payment requests they receive.

The conviction of a 48-year-old man for a horrible fatal accident in Paphos in 2021 with a 60-year-old victim was sealed by the Court of Appeal. The unfortunate woman was initially hit by a passing vehicle while she was crossing the road, as a result of which she fell on the asphalt, only for the accused to come and fatally injure her and abandon her, thinking it was garbage.

The Criminal Court in Paphos had sentenced him to six years in prison, with the convict appealing against the conviction and the sentence. The Court of Appeal rejected all the grounds of appeal, ruling that "there is nothing before us that makes the sentence imposed manifestly excessive and outside the permissible frameworks. On the contrary, we would characterize the sentence imposed as fair and proportionate to the circumstances of the case."

The fatal incident happened on December 19, 2021 in Paphos, with the victim being Androula Papachristoforou. The fatality was recorded by the kiosk cameras and the accused, 44 years old at the time, faced the charge of homicide, causing death due to a reckless, reckless or dangerous act, and the charge of leaving the scene of an accident without assistance. The appellant did not admit these accusations. However, he admitted four other charges related to driving without a valid driver's license, without an insurance certificate and registration of the vehicle and while the vehicle was in a condition that could cause danger to another person.

The details of the fatality, as recorded by the closed circuit, are shocking. It is stated in the decision that the deceased, having a black jacket on her head which she was holding with her hands, tried to cross the road. In this attempt, she was hit by an unknown vehicle and fell to the ground. While she was sitting trying to move off the road, she noticed another car coming, raised her hand making movements and the car, which was driven by the appellant, hit her and dragged her some distance.

The appellant stopped the car, got out, entered the courtyard of the kiosk where there were people holding their heads, talked to one of them, returned to his car and entered it. He then tried to move at forward speed, moved in reverse, so the victim was freed, the bumper of the car was disconnected and driving overtook the victim and left the scene. It is also stated that during the first collision of the appellant's vehicle with the victim but also when it moved in reverse and the victim was freed and appeared to be lying on the road, it was within range of the lights of the appellant's vehicle.

He had claimed at the trial that he had seen something on the street but believed it was garbage. However, the Criminal Court blasted him, saying that he should have looked to see what this something was, instead of leaving. As recorded in the decision, if the victim did not hit him, the accused would have lived, because the first blow was not fatal, since only the mirror had hit her.

The three-month-old boy, who was diagnosed with shaken infant syndrome, is fighting for his life at Makarios Hospital. As it became known, his father, aged 28, was arrested for the incident, who was placed in 4-day detention on suspicion of serious offenses related to the violent shaking of his son.

For the incident, Christodoulos Konsolos, Head of the Police Press Office, spoke to RIK, who confirmed information that previous allegations of abuse were pending against the 28-year-old father of the infant.

Offenses involving causing grievous bodily harm, exposing a child, mistreatment of a child under the age of 16, as well as other negligent acts aimed at causing bodily harm are being investigated against the 28-year-old.

An infant remains in critical condition

The condition of a three-month-old infant, who is being treated intubated in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of Makarios Hospital, remains critical, while the case is being investigated as possible abuse.

According to the press representative of OKYPY, Pambos Charilaou, the infant remains in critical condition.

According to radiodiagnostic tests, it was found that he had a hematoma in the brain, as a result of which the treating doctors proceeded with surgery.

In the cell the father who refuses any involvement

According to information from the Police, the infant, who lives with his parents in Nicosia, was transferred on Friday, January 23, 2026 to Makarios Hospital in serious condition. After conducting medical examinations, the treating physicians concluded that the child suffers from Shaken Baby Syndrome.

The TAE of Nicosia was mobilized when on Monday, after the information it received from the doctors of the Makarios Hospital.

The authorities were immediately put on alert, with the investigators of the Nicosia Police Department proceeding to collect witness material. As part of the examinations, an arrest warrant was issued against the 28-year-old father of the infant, a foreigner, who was arrested this morning.

Offenses involving causing grievous bodily harm, exposing a child, mistreatment of a child under 16, other negligent acts aimed at causing bodily harm are being investigated against the 28-year-old.

The suspect appeared before the Nicosia District Court, which issued a detention order against him for a period of four days. It is noted that the Police initially requested the issuance of an eight-day decree, however after a settlement they agreed with the court to four days. The suspect's lawyer did not raise any objections.

The Court considered the suspicions of the Police that the suspect may be involved in the injury of the infant as reasonable, due to the circumstances in which the offenses were committed as the father was alone with the three-month-old boy.

The father, however, denies any involvement, and as he stated before the Court, he will call the paediatrician who was monitoring the infant as a witness to testify.

The investigations of the TAE Nicosia are ongoing, while the taking of statements from doctors, neighbours and family is expected.

He is a 48-year-old man with Cypriot citizenship, allegedly the head of a criminal group, as well as 4 foreigners from Jordan and Palestine aged 26, 26, 32 and 20.

The five face serious charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, illegal possession and transportation of a firearm, illegal possession of explosives, extortion, demanding property with threats, participation in a criminal organization and assault causing actual bodily harm.

It is noted that three other foreigners aged 27, 26 and 35 are wanted for the case, for whom there is information that they fled abroad.

Meanwhile, two of the arrested, the 48-year-old and a 26-year-old, face additional charges for the beating of a 39-year-old man from Bulgaria in Pyla, a few hours before the incident in the center of Larnaca, specifically at 4 am on January 17. The two face charges of causing grievous bodily harm, causing actual bodily harm, threatening and carrying knives. A 27-year-old man is wanted for this case.

The Prosecution requested that the defendants remain in custody, with the proceedings continuing before the District Court, after their lawyers objected to their detention.

The defendants are said to be members of a criminal group, which approached a property businessman on avenue. Grigoris Afxentiou and seems to have initially asked him for €7,000 for protection and then €1,000 euros per month. According to the complainant, he initially called a person of Arab origin, who is wanted, and asked him for money. Threats over the phone followed, according to his complaint, while on Saturday, January 17, the person of Arab origin went to the spot and allegedly threatened the complainant with a knife.

Shortly after 3 pm, vehicles approached the area at high speed and 20 people disembarked from them. These persons demanded money from the complainant and when he refused, they allegedly started beating him. Then the complainant together with a relative and two of his friends reacted and counterattacked with an axe and crowbars. This was followed by the firing of two shots outside a fast food restaurant with a pistol allegedly held by a member of the 48-year-old's team.

It is recalled that as part of the investigation of the case, the Larnaca TAE also handcuffed two businessmen, 47 and 43 years old, who had meetings with the complainant in the case and allegedly asked him to change his testimony. The two defendants were referred to trial yesterday for interfering in a judicial process and have been released, on parole.

Defendants are changing their answer in the case of the suicide of 15-year-old Stylianos, which took place in 2019 in Kotsiatis, causing shock in Cypriot society.

Following the data, as they were formed at yesterday's hearing, two of the accused persons changed their response to the charges they were facing, while a third person is also oriented to declare admission to a number of charges.

More specifically, the 7th defendant, a 46-year-old former employee of the Social Welfare Services (SWS), changed his answer from non-admission to admission. Besides, the 5th defendant, through her lawyer Marios Spyrou, admitted three of the charges she faces.

The 3rd defendant also has the intention of admitting, but this is something that will be clarified by the answer sent by her legal representative to the Attorney General.

The District Judge, Pavlos Agapitos, has set the next hearing for February 25.

The central figure in the case, for which a total of 11 people are accused, is Stylianos' father. Testimonies given during the examinations for the suicide of the unfortunate teenager, brought his father, who ran a livestock unit in Kotsiatis, to exercise physical violence against the victim, but also against his wife.

The indictment includes a total of 218 charges and the first part concerns the couple, i.e. the 55-year-old father of the unfortunate child and his 48-year-old mother.

The 1st defendant is facing charges related to the exercise of physical and psychological violence, such as joint assault, subjecting a person to cruel, inhuman treatment, etc.

As for the mother, there is an accusation concerning the failure of a citizen to report cases of violence. According to the Domestic Violence Law of 2000, liable for this category is "anyone who fails to report a case of violence against a minor or a person with serious mental or mental deficiencies, who comes to his knowledge, commits an offence and in case of conviction is subject to imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to one thousand pounds or both of these penalties".

The other nine persons are accused of neglect of official duty. These are officers of the Social Welfare Services, i.e. either social workers or coordinators. At least two of them have now retired. The offenses in question are said to have been committed between 2008 and 2019.

A 58-year-old police sergeant is accused of Stylianos' suicide in a separate caseAlthough his case was initially brought before Judge Pavlos Agapitos, however, at the request of the 58-year-old's lawyer, it was decided that it should be heard by another Court.

The latter's defense attorney, Stavros Demetriou, had raised a relevant issue about the fact that both cases were before the same Court. He had indicated possible legal complications. He had explained that a person would be summoned before the same Judge to testify under oath in one case as a prosecution witness and in the other as a defendant. The relevant request to put the case before another Judge was approved last December.

The 58-year-old police officer who was serving at the Pera Chorio Police Station at the time in question is accused of neglecting official duty. According to the details of the offense, as recorded in the indictment, despite the fact that at an earlier stage of the 15-year-old's suicide the 58-year-old became aware that Stylianos attempted to take his own life, however, he failed to investigate the case, giving wrong instructions to his subordinates.
