It is necessary to implement targeted improvement projects in the Prisons until their relocation, in order to ensure the proper operation, strengthen security and improve the living conditions of convicts, said on Tuesday the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, in the context of a meeting he had on Tuesday with the Directors and staff of the Department of Public Works, of the Electromechanical Service and the Directorate of the Central Prisons.
According to an announcement by the Ministry, in the context of the meeting, clear implementation timelines were set, with the aim of completing the projects within three to six months, at the latest, and the Minister gave instructions for continuous monitoring of the progress of the implementation of the projects, to ensure that the works are progressing as agreed.
The announcement notes that during the meeting, which took place with the aim of coordinating and accelerating improvement projects in the existing Prisons, the Minister informed that the Prison expansion plan has been cancelled, as space has been found for the construction of new Prisons.
At the same time, he underlined that until the relocation, it is necessary to implement targeted improvement projects, in order to ensure the smooth operation, strengthen security and improve the living conditions of convicts.
Among the projects planned are, among other things, the renovation of the clinics, the creation of a new entrance exclusively for the staff of the Prisons, the construction of a new clothing warehouse, the creation of a new clinic in the Open Prisons, the construction of a new laundry area for the needs of the prisoners, as well as the implementation of a system to prevent the use of mobile phones [underway], according to the announcement.
At the same time, the procurement and utilization of an electronic surveillance system has already been launched, with the relevant order having been completed and the delivery of the equipment expected by the contractor company, in order to expand the possibilities of release of convicts on parole, with full assurance of public safety
The Minister reiterated his will for close cooperation with all relevant Services, with the aim of completing the interventions on time and ensuring substantial and measurable results, the announcement concludes.
