WATER FLOWS INTO MAVROKOLYMPOS DAM AGAIN

Filenews 22 December 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

The water flows again after a whole year, even in very small quantities, into the Mavrokolympos dam. The dam in the area of Pegeia, which is now functionally ready after the repair works of the significant damage that caused its drainage, began to store the first quantities of water after the heavy rains brought by Byron and yesterday's cataclysmic rainfall, but also the surplus from the Asprokremmos refinery in the off-season period we are now experiencing.

Since the beginning of October, the works to repair the major damage that occurred last January have been completed and the dam has successfully passed all the necessary specialized and preventive checks that followed, in order to make it official that it is in full operation.

Mavrokolympos is now reconnected to the irrigation network of Paphos and ready to receive the quantities of water that this year's rainfall of the hydrological year will bring. The dam's evacuation system, which caused the major damage and contributed to the loss of all the quantities of water that were stored, has now been restored, while the necessary additional improvement works have been carried out to avoid a future problem.

Already in the daily bulletins of the Water Department for the occupancy of the dams, Mavrokolympos has "detached" from the 0% it showed throughout 2025 and has now risen to 15% of its occupancy. Officials of the Water Department, as well as the agents and farmers of the area, hope that the situation will soon improve to a more spectacular degree with the rains of the next two months and with the storage of water from the refinery that will be left over in the winter.
