THE CLEANEST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD

 Filenews 22 December 2025

History, monuments and natural landscapes are key criteria for choosing a travel destination. However, beyond its tourist image, the daily quality of life plays a crucial role for those considering settling permanently in a country, with cleanliness emerging as a key factor for its attractiveness.

The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) issued the list with the degree of cleanliness of each state, evaluating countries based on environmental health and ecosystem sustainability. However, Cyprus is in 43rd place out of 180 countries included in the relevant list with a score of 53.9.

The criteria addressed by the evaluation of the ECI

Using 58 performance indicators across 11 topic categories, the EPI ranks 180 countries in terms of climate change performance, environmental health, and ecosystem vitality. Specifically, for 2025, European countries, mainly in the north, are at the top of the ranking.

Some of the key factors that the EPI measures are:

  • Air and Water Quality
  • Waste management and recycling
  • Biodiversity and ecosystem conservation
  • Climate change policies

This indicator therefore measures not only immediate cleanliness, but also a country's ability to maintain healthy ecosystems in the long term.
