SPECIAL CHAIRS IN STAIRWELLS OF REFUGEE APARTMENT BUILDINGS - PROPOSAL TO BE IMPLEMENTED ON A PILOT BASIS

 Filenews 9 December 2025

Special chairs will be installed on a pilot basis in the stairwells of refugee apartment buildings to serve people with mobility problems, the President of the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees, AKEL MP, Nikos Kettiros, said on Tuesday, adding that the Department of Urban Planning presented before the Refugee Committee its proposal to serve people with mobility problems in refugee apartment buildings.

The study of the proposal is still ongoing, however the proposal will be piloted at least immediately, said Mr. Kettiros, adding that provision is made for the installation of a special chair in the stairwell. "As the competent officer of the Department of Urban Planning told us, there are (special chairs) both indoor and outdoor," he noted.

The President of the Committee also stated that the Refugee Committee requested that 2-3 apartment buildings be identified and that this proposal be immediately implemented on a pilot basis. "Above all, these people who are facing the problems must be asked to know if it serves them at least temporarily until a legislative solution is found with this issue," he added.

"The cost for 2 floors, as the competent officer (of the Department of Urban Planning) told us, is around €15,000-20,000," he concluded.
