RESEARCH - CYPRIOTS USE THE INTERNET FOR CALLS AND MESSAGING VIA SKYPE, MESSENGER, WHATSAPP AND VIBER

Online calls and messaging are the most popular uses of the internet in Cyprus, with participation in social networks and reading news following, according to the results of a special survey conducted by the Statistical Service, on the use of information and communication technologies in households for 2025.

According to the survey, nine out of ten people use the internet at least once a week (93.6%). Internet use decreases according to age: starting from 98.5% for the 16-24 age group, internet use decreases to 81.5% for the 55-74 age group. People with a high level of education use the internet more often (98.9%) than people with a low level of education (75.9%).

The most popular online activities in the first quarter of 2025 were making online calls (96.4%), messaging via Skype, Messenger, WhatsApp and Viber (96.2%), participating in social networks such as Facebook and X (92.3%), reading online news (91.1%) and searching for information about products or services (88.2%).

20.5% of people who used the internet in the first quarter of 2025 used online educational materials, 17.8% took an online lesson and another 17.8% contacted teachers or students using online audio or video tools.

e-Government

During the period April 2024 – March 2025 62.7% of people between the ages of 16-74 received information from government agencies electronically, 52% had access to information stored about them by public authorities or agencies, and 31.9% had access to information from public databases or registers.

E-commerce

The share of people who shopped online in the first quarter of 2025 decreased slightly to 62% compared to 63.6% in the same period last year.

The most popular categories of products or services acquired through an online subscription were the following: movies, series, or sports programs streaming service (43.5%), music streaming services (18.3%), game streaming services (9.5%), and health or fitness-related apps (7.5%).

Among those aged 16–74 who ordered or purchased products or services online in the first quarter of 2025, 58.6% purchased tickets for events, 53.2% purchased accommodation services, and 50.3% purchased transportation services.
