MAVROKOLYMPOS DAM REACHES LEVEL OF 25%

Pafos Press 29 December 2025

Today's images from the Mavrokolympos Dam are a psychological boost for the residents of Paphos, as they have gradually begun to receive the first significant water reserves again after the serious technical damage was repaired.

It is recalled that the dam suffered serious damage on January 19, 2025, resulting in the loss of approximately 1.2 million cubic meters of water. The restoration work was completed around the end of September and with the recent rainfall, the reservoir began to fill again, causing satisfaction and moderate optimism, especially among farmers in the area.

According to data from the Water Development Department, on December 23, the dam's fullness had already reached 25%, a percentage that is expected to increase further with the new count to be held on Monday, if the rainfall continues.

The Mavrokolympos Dam has a total capacity of 2.18 million cubic meters and is one of the eight dams in the Paphos District, ranking fifth in size. It was built in 1967 and is located between the communities of Peyia, Kissonerga, Akoursos and Koili.

Restoring the dam to a smooth operating path is considered particularly important for both the water balance of the region and agricultural activity, at a time when water resources remain a critical issue for the whole of Cyprus.
