DOUBLE CHRISTMAS: WHY IS IT CELEBRATED ON DIFFERENT DAYS?
But why do some people celebrate it on December 25, while others on January 7 [or 6 January]?
This happened because of… calendar confusion. The Julian calendar, introduced in 46 BC, had accumulated a significant error by the 16th century, with one extra unaccounted day every 128 years.
As a result, a new calendar, the Gregorian calendar, was introduced in Europe in 1582. At the same time, in Russia, Serbia, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Bulgaria, and some other countries and churches (for example, the Jerusalem Orthodox Church), the Julian calendar continued to be used.
In 2025, the Julian calendar is not official in any country in the world for civil life (government documents, working days, school calendars, banks, holidays, etc.). The Julian calendar is preserved only in the liturgical practice of some Orthodox Churches.
In the 21st century, the difference between the two calendars is 13 days.
And when do you celebrate Christmas?
