Update - Filenews

Investigations and interrogations have been launched by the TAE of Nicosia for the death of a 35-year-old long-term convict foreigner within wing no. 4 of the Central Prison, after an incident he had with a Cypriot minor offender.

According to information from Filenews, the incident happened in the late afternoon when a prisoner entered the cell of the 35-year-old Egyptian and in 10 seconds got out of it. It seems that there was an incident between them and the prison guards immediately intervened and separated them. In fact, the Egyptian, after the incident, had come out of his cell and insisted on going to find the other prisoner to beat him.

Due to the disturbance caused, the security staff of the Prisons entered the wing and locked, according to our same information, all the prisoners in their cells. The 35-year-old remained in the prison guards' office and at some point and after 8-10 minutes had passed, he felt unwell and collapsed. An ambulance was immediately called to the prison where it picked him up, while at the same time the Nicosia Police Department was informed.

From the first examinations of the prison guards, the Egyptian did not seem to have any bruises on his body and tomorrow with the legal autopsy the causes of his death will become clear. It is noted that everything that took place in the wing, the efforts of the staff, their immediate reaction until their receipt, are recorded on video by the closed circuit surveillance of the prisons, which has already been handed over to the Police.

TAE investigators are taking testimonies from prison guards and detainees of the wing to clarify what had happened, whether the detainee was beaten, while the Greek Cypriot who is allegedly involved in the incident which in one way or another led to the death of the 35-year-old will also be interrogated. The deceased was serving a 17-year prison sentence for the murder of a young woman in a village in the Larnaca District.

The embassy of his country in Cyprus has already been informed about his death so that it can in turn inform his family.

The Police arrested a person in connection with the premeditated murder in the central prison today in the early hours of the morning on the basis of a court warrant.

He is a 30-year-old Greek Cypriot convict.

Today he is expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court for the issuance of a detention order.
