The Limassol Criminal Court imposed a suspended sentence on a 25-year-old defendant, then a security guard, who was accused of sexually abusing a child under the age of 18, with a complaining high school student in Limassol at the time. The 25-year-old at that time was acting as a security guard for a few days at the high school where the minor attended.

The Criminal Court sentenced the accused to two years in prison for the crime of sexual abuse of a child, after his own admission. His defense attorney, Sylvia Adamou, recommended the suspension of the sentence, which falls within the discretion of the Court. Ultimately, the Court moved in this direction due to the exceptional circumstances of the case.

According to the facts, the offense was committed on September 29, 2023, eight days before the complainant turned 17 years old. The accused at the time of the commission of the crime was almost 23 years old. As noted, the decision, despite the fact that the personal circumstances of the complainant, combined with her very young age, made her emotionally vulnerable and possibly an easy victim of exploitation, however, the facts do not demonstrate that the accused took advantage of her psychological state to develop a love affair, which ultimately led to complete sexual intercourse.

The accused's admission was immediate, and it was emphasized that without his cooperation with the Police, his admission in Court and his apology before it, leniency would have been limited. The Court notes that the exceptional circumstances of the case and all the mitigating factors allow for discretion to suspend the sentence. Mainly, it was taken into account that the complainant would turn 17 just eight days after the offense, the age difference was not particularly large and there was no form of violence or coercion. In addition, in favour of the suspension, it was taken into account that the accused has a clean criminal record, the father of a 2-year-old minor child and that two years have passed since the commission of the offense. The two-year prison sentence is suspended for a period of three years.

A disturbance was caused on Friday night in Limassol, when a fire was deliberately set on tyres in the middle of the road in Mesa Geitonia, in front of a church.

According to a post on the RoadReport.CY platform, the incident took place shortly before midnight. According to a driver's testimony, the incident took place around 23:40, in front of a church. As reported, young people allegedly set fire to tyres that had been placed on the road.

The fire produced thick smoke and created dangerous conditions for traffic, forcing passing vehicles to slow down and move cautiously around burning objects.

Members of the Police and the Fire Service rushed to the scene, who proceeded to extinguish the fire, while the authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The incident seems to be linked to today, since December 13, in recent years, has been informally associated with episodes of vandalism, arson and clashes with the Police, mainly by groups of minors.
