A series of proposals to deal with environmental pollution is submitted by the Environmental Cultural Association of Chloraka in an announcement signed by its president Andreas Kyriakou, who notes that without systematic legislative and private initiatives to reduce waste production, the cleanups that are being carried out remain only temporary solutions.
Among his long-standing proposals are the introduction of a cashback system for soft drink bottles and cans – as is already the case in many European countries, the imposition of an additional environmental fee on take-away cafes and the organisation of regular collection of bulky waste such as mattresses and furniture.
Mr. Kyriakou also stated that environmental awareness should be cultivated from the first school years, noting that recycling should be taught and systematically applied in all kindergartens and schools, so that children grow up with respect for the environment.
The State must take initiatives on a much larger scale, it is noted.
