Filenews 3 November 2025 - by Petros Afxentiou
A total of 51 people changed their gender and name in Cyprus from 2021 until today.
According to data obtained by Filenews from the Ministry of the Interior, these are 20 men who changed their gender to female and 31 women who changed their gender to male.
There is also a case of gender reassignment, but this person did not proceed with a name change.
The age limit and the cost
All persons over the age of 18 in Cyprus have the right to apply for a change of gender and name, in accordance with the legislation and procedure established by the Republic of Cyprus. The application is accompanied by a fee of €80.
The procedure provides that the change of registered gender is carried out at the written request of the person concerned, submitted in the form of a letter or curriculum vitae, accompanied by an affidavit to the Registrar. Applicants may, if they wish, attach medical certificates, such as proof of hormone therapy, but this is not an obligation.
The application is submitted to the relevant Registrar (District Administration), while for persons residing abroad, it is possible to submit it through the competent Diplomatic Authority of the Republic of Cyprus (Embassy or Consulate).
It is noted that the correction of the registered gender cannot be carried out more than twice, while all applications are examined with respect to the protection of personal data.
Issuance of new documents
After the approval of the change of gender and name, the current official documents of the Republic are cancelled and the person must immediately submit an application for the issuance of new ones, with his updated details. The relevant procedures and the necessary forms are available through a special link on the website of the competent service.
Applications for new documents should only be submitted after the approval of the gender change request and not at the same time as it. When submitting, interested parties should present their old documents for cancellation.
As emphasized by the competent services, all procedures and requests related to gender correction and the issuance of new documents are handled with absolute confidentiality, in the context of the protection of personal data.
