GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DEPARTMENT - GRADUAL DAMPING OF THE SEISMIC SEQUENCE IN PAPHOS

 Filenews 14 November 2025

The Geological Survey Department finds a gradual weakening of the seismic sequence in the area of Agia Marina of Kelokedara, which in a statement states that both the magnitude and frequency of the earthquakes are declining. Despite the smooth development, the Department emphasizes that the possibility of new strong tremors cannot be ruled out, although the chances decrease with time.

The seismic activity began on the morning of Wednesday, November 12, 2025, about 20 kilometers northeast of Paphos. In the first five hours, there were two strongly felt earthquakes, with a magnitude of 5.2 and 5.3, which were felt throughout Cyprus, especially in the provinces of Paphos, Limassol and Nicosia, but also on the coast of the eastern Mediterranean.

The subsequent seismic activity was particularly increased, with more than 200 recorded earthquakes within 48 hours from the same focal area. Dozens of them were felt, while 16 were between 3,0 and 4,5 on the Richter scale.

According to the Department, in the last period of 42 hours, there is a smooth development of the sequence and a gradual depreciation of the phenomenon. The analysis of the data continues and the relevant updates are published on the websites of the Seismological Center.
