Paphos may have become independent of the weather conditions for its water supply in the near future due to the desalination plants that are now in operation, but in the long term it is necessary to promote projects for the complete independence of the entire province in water and for the strengthening of the primary sector in irrigation.
This is what the president of the EDA Paphos, Charalambos Pittokopitis, emphasizes in his statements to "F", who states in particular that for the two new dams that, since taking office he stressed that it is necessary to build them in Paphos, have been included in the medium and long-term planning of the state.
These are, he clarified, the dam we were asking to be built in Episkopi, with a capacity of 5 million cubic meters of water, and the dam in Souskiou, which will be an enrichment and not a storage dam, that is, it will hold the flow of water so that quantities are not lost.
These are projects, he said, that will strengthen the water balance of the Paphos district and will actively support both the water supply and irrigation in the province. He also spoke of a professional class of people, referring to farmers, who will now find it very difficult to continue to engage in agriculture and have income to support their families, if they do not receive support through such projects from the state.
Mr. Pittokopitis also stressed that the construction of a desalination plant for the water supply of the Polis Chrysochous area is considered a dominant issue by the EDA Paphos. This area, he pointed out, is the only one in Cyprus that is supplied with water exclusively by drilling. And given the prolonged drought, he noted, many of them have already begun to show signs of a serious reduction in the available quantities of water they gave.
So, only through a desalination plant will we ensure the permanent sufficiency of water for the Chrysochous area, concluded Charalambos Pittokopitis.
