EAC & BIRDLIFE CYPRUS JOIN FORCES

 Pafos Live 4 November 2025

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) and BirdLife Cyprus signed today a Memorandum of Understanding with the aim of upgrading their cooperation on issues related to the protection of wild birds and biodiversity in general.

The agreement provides for the design and implementation of joint actions to prevent, monitor and mitigate the impact of the power grid on wildlife, with a focus on vulnerable and endangered species such as the Griffon Vulture, Bonelli's Eagle and other large birds. This cooperation is part of the EAC's commitment to include the protection of the environment and wildlife in its actions through the development of its energy network.

The purpose of this cooperation is to create a common framework for action that will allow the two parties to exchange know-how, identify and implement practical solutions to reduce the impact of energy infrastructure on birds, and promote joint awareness-raising and education initiatives. Through this collaboration, EAC and BirdLife Cyprus seek to make a substantial contribution to the coexistence of energy infrastructure with the preservation of biodiversity.

According to recent studies, collision and electric shock to electricity infrastructure are one of the leading causes of mortality for large birds across Europe. Cyprus is no exception, as surveillance data from satellite transmitters carrying

birds of prey for monitoring purposes demonstrate that electric shock and impact are the second cause of mortality for the Griffon Vulture and the third for Bonelli's Eagle.

The EAC, recognizing its role as a key energy network operator, invests in collaboration and innovation that contribute to sustainable development, aligned with European and international commitments for a green transition with respect for biodiversity and the environment.

The partnership with BirdLife Cyprus reflects the belief that collective efforts between the energy sector and environmental organizations can lead to meaningful results for the protection and conservation of species and the creation of a sustainable energy future for our country.
