Cyprus and Britain explored ways to strengthen EU-UK relations on Thursday as the island prepares to chair the European Union Council from January 2026, according to the Press and Information Office.
Deputy minister for European affairs Marilena Raouna met British minister for the constitution and EU relations Nick Thomas-Symonds during his working visit to Cyprus to discuss deepening ties in areas of mutual benefit.
The two sides confirmed the excellent level of bilateral relations and exchanged views on capitalising on momentum from May’s positive EU-UK summit in London, the office said. They noted implementing existing agreements and delivering concrete results on security and defence, people-to-people contacts, and migration.
Discussions covered the UK’s participation in the SAFE regulation, Erasmus+, youth mobility, sanitary and phytosanitary cooperation, and EU-UK trade issues.
Both sides expressed readiness to maintain close cooperation during Cyprus’s EU presidency to keep momentum in EU-UK relations and strengthen them for mutual benefit.
Raouna briefed Thomas-Symonds on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and efforts to restart negotiations based on UN Security Council resolutions, as well as progress on Cyprus’s full integration into the Schengen area, the office said.
