Fleur Thomas is the second woman to take over the position of Civilian Commander of the British Bases (BB) in Cyprus, according to an official announcement. Fleur Thomas has officially assumed the prestigious position of Political Administrator of the BB regions and the Administration Department of BB Cyprus, marking a significant milestone as the second woman to assume this distinguished position. She replaced Clare Simpson, who served as Political Administrator from September 2021 until last week, when she returned to the United Kingdom (UK).
According to the announcement of the British Bases, Ms. Thomas brings with her a wealth of experience from her distinguished career as a Senior Civil Servant, with her particular recent position as British Ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. "Her extensive background in governance and diplomacy positions her in an excellent position to take on the unique challenges and opportunities associated with BB management in Cyprus," it is noted.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the position, she emphasizes her willingness to work closely with the Presidents of the local communities within the BB regions. He has emphasized the importance of fostering strong relationships and collaboration to ensure the continued success of the BBs, which play a pivotal role in supporting both the local population and the UK's strategic interests.
As Political Administrator, Ms. Thomas will be responsible for a range of tasks, from managing the day-to-day administration of the BBs to overseeing development projects in collaboration with local communities. She has expressed her commitment to delving deeper into Cypriot culture and establishing meaningful relationships with her team and the wider community. In a statement about her new role, she described the position as "an extremely interesting combination of leadership and implementation challenge, spanning from strategic planning to practical implementation."
