Around 1.600 appointments are scheduled until October 31 for corrective measures in relation to the recalls due to TAKATA airbags, said the Director General of the Department of Road Transport, Giorgos Louka.
As of October 3, the certificates of suitability (MOT) for those vehicles pending the implementation of a recall for the replacement of an airbag were suspended, on the basis of the eight-month deadline set by Circular 8/2025, in February 2025.
In a statement from the TOM, it was stated that by September 30, cases were still pending for about 16.900 vehicles or about 20% of the original number which was around 81.000 vehicles. It was noted that the number of Toyota brand vehicles stood out, since, according to data provided by the company to the Department, about 5.000 owners did not respond. For another 2.000 Honda brand vehicles, the owners did not respond, according to data provided by the company.
It is recalled that the TOM had given an extension of the suspension of the MOT to those vehicles that had arranged an appointment for the implementation of the recall until October 31. As Mr. Louka told KYPE, while around 300 appointments were scheduled in Toyota, with the mobilization of the last 1-2 days, it was possible to arrange another 1.300 appointments by the deadline.
At the same time, he informed that there are other appointments available and called on the owners of the vehicles that have not responded so far to do so.
As the director of TOM mentioned, in recent days the Department has been receiving too many phone calls about this issue. He said that owners should check when the eight-month deadline for recalling their vehicle passes, through the TOM website, and take corrective action before this date arrives.
He called on people to contact dealers and manufacturers for all kinds of recalls, although companies must also inform consumers, as he said. Recalls "are part of everyday life, we as consumers must be concerned," he said. He added that this particular recall concerns an issue for which there is a risk and called on the people to proceed with the corrective measures. "We recognize the inconvenience, but it is about the common good," he noted.
Repeat MOT after recall implementation
According to what Mr. Loukas said, for those vehicles that the MOT is suspended because they did not take corrective measures in time, after the implementation of the recall, their owners will have to repeat the MOT process.https://www.philenews.com/kipros/koinonia/article/1627394/apognosi-gia-idioktites-anapirikon-ochimaton-antimetopi-me-akinitopiisi-logo-ton-anakliseon-takata/
Regarding the supervision of the implementation of immobilizers, in a statement, the Police states that for the specific cases of suspension of the validity of the certificate of suitability, in which the immediate immobilization is not valid, "the members of the Police will issue out-of-court fines and the driver will be urged to make the necessary arrangements, to repair any damage, so that the certificate of suitability can be renewed'.
In addition, the Police clarifies that they will continue to apply the measure of prohibiting the continuation of driving and indicating to the driver to use a tow truck when it is a vehicle for which immediate immobilization applies and when there is a serious problem in relation to the mechanical or other condition of the vehicle.
