The Pancyprian Veterinary Association responds with proposals for measures to deal with the overpopulation of cats, noting that the discussion around the issue, which centers around the Association's opposition to the creation of state clinics, must be placed on a "proper basis", as it says.
Specifically, in order to reduce the population of stray cats, the Association proposes free sterilizations in all veterinary clinics, with free choice of veterinarian by the citizen, use of the resources of the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee for Animal Welfare, with a substantial contribution from the state, as well as the possibility of tax-free contributions from citizens, companies and bequests for continuous support of the program.
It also proposes a planned implementation of the sterilization program by region, with supervision of the Veterinary Services, marking all sterilized cats with microchips and registering them as strays, but also cooperation with Municipalities, Communities, voluntary organizations and training of young volunteers and municipal employees in the proper trapping and transport of cats with friendly methods.
The Association states that the proposal has already been discussed with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee for Welfare and the Environment Committee of the Parliament and says that it is "a comprehensive, realistic and immediately applicable plan, which can start today".
"The solution to the problem will not come with piecemeal measures or unworkable suggestions," he adds, concluding that "the only way to achieve massive numbers of sterilizations and a substantial reduction in the population of stray cats is the immediate implementation of the program we propose and the cooperation of everyone."
