SCHOOLS - SHORTS TO BE ALLOWED AS SCHOOL UNIFORM OPTION IN SUMMER

in-cyprus 24 October 2025

Students in schools can now wear shorts during hot summer months, but the specific style must be jointly decided by students, school management and parents, according to the Education Ministry.

Education Minister Athena Michaelidou, responding to a parliamentary question by MP Chrysanthos Savvides, confirmed that the Ministry has granted this option to secondary schools through a circular issued on May 27, 2025.

“Within the framework of school autonomy, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth has given each school’s administration the ability to permit students to wear shorts during periods of high temperatures in summer months,” Michaelidou stated in her response.

The circular specifies that each school administration must collaborate with both the Central Student Council and the Parents and Guardians Association, with the decision on the type of shorts to be adopted made in a joint meeting of all stakeholders.

Savvides noted in his question that male students’ daily uniform throughout the year consists of black or grey trousers for gymnasium (lower secondary) and blue or black jeans without inscriptions or tears for lyceum (upper secondary).

“During months with high temperatures, male students are required to wear long trousers and do not have the option to wear shorts, resulting in strong reactions due to the unbearable heat,” Savvides wrote in his parliamentary question.

The MP had asked the minister to inform parliament whether students could be permitted to wear shorts during high-temperature months, according to the discretion of school management.
