Cyprus is already implementing key aspects of the declaration on illegal migration adopted in Copenhagen by 17 European countries, said Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection Nicolas Ioannides, underlining that these issues are priorities for the country.
As he said, the declaration is a reaffirmation of the common goals of the European Union and its member states in the field of migration. "It concerns issues that are already being promoted and will continue to be promoted by both the member states and the European Commission," he noted.
Mr. Ioannides pointed out that Cyprus has recorded a significant decrease in migration flows, while at the same time recording a record number of returns of irregular migrants. "These are issues that we emphasize and for us they are a clear priority," he stressed.
It is recalled that the Copenhagen Declaration, signed by the leaders of 17 European countries, including Cyprus, provides for strengthening the fight against smugglers, improving asylum and return systems and closer cooperation with third countries to deal with migration flows. At the same time, innovative solutions and new legal frameworks are being promoted for more effective border management and the weakening of criminal networks.
