MINISTRY OF HEALTH - FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL ACCESS TO PrEP FOR HIV PREVENTION

Filenews 7 October 2025

The Ministry of Health has announced the launch of a new HIV prevention service, underlining that it is an "important step" towards strengthening public health and reducing new diagnoses in the country.

According to the announcement, from October 9, 2025, the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis service (PrEP) will be implemented, a method through which HIV-negative people receive special medication to drastically reduce the risk of transmission in case of possible exposure.

PrEP is already being implemented in many European countries and is a key pillar of the strategies of the World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. With the introduction of the service, Cyprus is fully aligned with international guidelines, strengthening the framework for the protection of public and sexual health.

In the first phase, PrEP services will be provided free of charge and with complete confidentiality in Nicosia and Larnaca, through afternoon clinics in general hospitals, by appointment. Specialized doctors will guide citizens through the process, while additional information and support is offered by the AIDS Support Movement, through the "Cyprus PrEP Point".
