LEBANON APPROVED THE DELIMITATION OF THE EEZ WITH CYPRUS - IT HAD BEEN PENDING SINCE 2007

The Lebanese Council of Ministers yesterday approved the delimitation of the maritime border between Lebanon and Cyprus. The matter is now expected to be submitted to Parliament for ratification.

According to a post by "Observe Lebanon", this move could bring about important developments in regional exploration and cooperation in the field of energy.

"As Lebanon faces its own economic challenges, the consolidation of the maritime border may strengthen its negotiating position on potential resource extraction," it said.

It is recalled that the delimitation agreement had been pending since 2007 and defined the maritime EEZ with a "middle line" that defined six points, but ambiguities remained, especially around points 1 and 6 and the issue had been temporarily put "on hold" until the delimitations with neighbouring countries (Syria, Israel) were completed.

The Lebanese Works Committee had recommended inviting foreign experts and legal experts, and even experts in natural resources, in order to clarify technical and legal issues regarding the method of calculating the areas.

The Lebanese government even called for a careful technical and legal review before making any new commitment or signature with Cyprus, as the issue has a clear sovereign dimension and may also affect the demarcation with Syria.
