Normality may have been brought to Paphos Airport due to the removal of the concrete partitions, but at Larnaca Airport, however, the road is still long. Despite the fact that it was decided that the reasons for the implementation of the emergency security measures taken two years ago no longer exist, due to the situation in Israel, the way of arrivals in Larnaca cannot yet be opened.
As the Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis, explained to "F", the arrivals area is now a construction site due to the expansion works of the airport, which are expected to be completed in the summer of 2027. "The good news is that after two years of hostilities starting, we can say that the danger has disappeared, as well as the reasons why traffic in front of the airport entrances has been restricted. That is why in Paphos we have removed the concrete partitions. We would do the same in Larnaca, however, at this stage it is being used by Hermes as part of the construction site. As soon as this is possible, however, we will restore traffic at the airport to its original state," he noted. This, according to Mr. Vafeadis, is expected to happen near the end of the completion of the works.
Asked to state whether any measures will be taken by then, so that during peak periods there is no traffic jam, he replied in the affirmative. "The problems with congestion exist both outside and inside the airport. For both areas we are working on some solutions to help the situation and I hope to have something to announce soon. I think it will be simpler and faster to implement some measures in the vehicle access area, something for which we will start a discussion with Hermes Airports very soon," he added, indicating that it is premature at this time to announce measures.
The arrivals area at Larnaca Airport has been closed since October 2023. For this reason, those who rush to drop off or pick up passengers use the departures route, resulting in long queues of vehicles and inconvenience, especially during peak periods.
