Officials of the Customs Department located yesterday, at Larnaca Airport, two Turkish Cypriot passengers who were preparing to depart for the United Kingdom, having large quantities of duty-free tobacco products in their luggage.

According to an announcement by the Department, the products did not bear the mandatory indications for the harmful nature of smoking in the Greek and Turkish languages, nor the safety feature and the unique traceability code, which indicated that they were illegal tobacco products.

During the check, 49 boxes of 200 cigarettes each were found in the luggage of the first passenger, as well as smoke for rolled cigarettes with a total weight of 4 kilograms and 850 grams. The passenger was arrested for flagrante delicto, while the luggage and its contents were confiscated. He was later released, after an out-of-court settlement proposal was accepted.

In the luggage of the second passenger71 boxes of 200 cigarettes and smoke for rolled cigarettes weighing 1 kg and 250 grams were found. She was also arrested for flagrante delicto, with the luggage confiscated. She was released after accepting an out-of-court settlement for the offenses attributed to her.

The Customs Department reminds that the import, possession or distribution of duty-free tobacco products is a serious offense, which is punishable under Cypriot law.

Members of the Police conducted a search today by virtue of a court warrant in the fenced garden of a 54-year-old man in the province of Larnaca.

During the investigation, three buckets with a total of 165 dead wild birds were found, as well as an improvised sound device and various other objects, which were taken as evidence.

In a subsequent search of the 54-year-old's car, the Police found three knives that ended in a pointed tip and a bat. The man was arrested for flagrante delicto.

A 32-year-old man, who was at the scene, was also arrested, after a search of his car found three knives ending at a pointed edge.

All items were received and detained as evidence, while the two suspects were taken into custody.

In addition, a 28-year-old third person who was also at the scene was arrested and taken into custody, as it was found that he was illegally residing on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.

The examinations continue at the Aradipos Police Station.

The Police arrested a 19-year-old driver in connection with the fatal car accident that occurred yesterday at noon on Grigori Afxentiou Street in Pera Orini, with the victim 71-year-old Dimitris Skoufaris from Lakatamia.

According to the Police, the accident happened around 2:30 in the afternoon, when, under circumstances that are being investigated, the car driven by the 19-year-old dragged the elderly man, who was trying to cross the road.

The 71-year-old was taken by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital, where the doctor on duty pronounced him dead.

The young driver underwent a breathalyzer and drug test, with negative results, however he was arrested under a court warrant to facilitate investigations. After his interrogationhe was released and will be summoned before a Court.

The Nicosia Traffic Police continues the investigations to determine the exact causes of the accident.
