The Pancyprian Veterinary Association (PKS) expresses its strong reaction to the proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment for the reactivation of the old public veterinary clinics, with the aim of sterilizing stray cats.
The proposal, which provides for the operation of one public clinic per city and was presented last week to the Environment Committee, is characterized by the PKS as "a serious regression and distortion of the modern scientific and institutional approach", while it is estimated that it poses risks to the effective management of the overpopulation of strays.
According to the Association, the operation of a single clinic per city is not enough to deal with a problem that affects hundreds of thousands of animals, while the revival of public clinics requires high investments in infrastructure, equipment and staffing, without ensuring results. At the same time, it is noted that their reopening may violate the European acquis, causing unfair competition with the private sector and risks of appeals and sanctions.
PKS reminds that it has already submitted to the Ministry a comprehensive strategic plan, which is based on cooperation with private veterinary clinics, ensuring easier access, better geographical coverage and the continuation of the existing program, with the possibility of immediate implementation.
