The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, reiterated today that the Republic of Cyprus is fully committed to the electricity interconnection project, which he described as of geostrategic importance. He stressed that Nicosia will fully fulfil the commitments it has undertaken and expressed the hope that all those involved will do the same.
Speaking to journalists in Paralimni, Christodoulides commented on the recent reports of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on the issue, highlighting three key points.
First, he noted that Cyprus' commitment to the project is also confirmed by the international initiatives it undertakes. He recalled his visit to the United Arab Emirates together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, where he met with the President of the country for possible cooperation through a joint venture and investments that will enhance the implementation of the project.
Secondly, he stressed that both Cyprus and Greece have undertaken specific commitments and assured that Nicosia will abide by them. He reiterated his expectation that all stakeholders involved will do the same. "I can speak for the Republic of Cyprus and say publicly that the Republic of Cyprus will fulfil the commitments it has undertaken. I hope all those involved will implement their commitments," he said meaningfully.
Thirdly, he referred to the dimension of national sovereignty linked to the project, making it clear that he will not get involved in public debates that "do not help" and may call into question the national interests of the country. "It is important to say less and do more," he said.
