Employment by occupation, occupation and gender
Total employment in Cyprus amounted to 506,318 people in the second quarter of 2025, an increase compared to the corresponding quarter of 2015, when the number of employees amounted to 360,809, according to data from the Statistical Service. Of the total of 2025, men amount to 269,796 and women to 236,522.
Employed and self-employed
Most of the workforce is employees, who reached 455,728, up from 306,275 in 2015. In contrast, the self-employed recorded a decrease, as they were limited to 50,590 people, from 54,534 ten years earlier.
Professional categories
A notable increase is recorded among directors and administrative officers, from 13,449 in 2015 to 22,989 in 2025. The largest category remains the "qualified and other specialists", which increased from 66,672 to 121,074 people. A significant increase is also observed in technical and assistant specialist secretaries (75,731 from 47,048).
On the other hand, farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen remain almost stable, with a slight decrease to 8,869 people in 2025 from 8,920 in 2015.
Gender and occupational differences
Women dominate occupations such as clerks, typists and cashiers (34,707 versus 13,528 men), as well as unskilled workers (43,467 women versus 22,274 men). Men continue to outperform in sectors such as production technicians (48,269 versus 2,133 women) and machine operators (22,062 versus 2,005).
Military
In the military, employment increased to 6,089 people from 4,507, with men reaching 5,119 and women reaching 970.
