The fire brigades were alerted yesterday morning after a fire broke out in a riverbed, near the industrial area of Agios Silas in Limassol, and which threatened a neighbouring factory. The Fire Brigade does not rule out the possibility that the fire was set maliciously.

According to an announcement by the Fire Service, three fire trucks from the stations of the Limassol district responded to the extinguishing operation, and the fire was brought under control shortly before 12:00. Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to the metal processing plant located near the scene.

The Hunting Service, with a Portable Firefighting Unit, and the Municipality of Kourion, with an excavator, assisted in the extinguishing work. The fire burned about three dozen yards of grass, wild vegetation and acacias.

The causes of the incident are being investigated in cooperation with the Police, as there are indications of malicious action, the Fire Department states.

An incredible case is recorded in Limassol, with a 22-year-old man stealing parts from the lightning protection system from the engine room of the General Hospital. The illegal act of the young man, who confessed to stealing and selling the stolen property of the hospital, was recorded by the closed circuit surveillance, while the hospital manager was watching him live from his mobile phone.

As Filenews is informed, the incident was reported on 22/9 to the Polemidia Police Station. Specifically, in the early hours of the same day, components of the lightning protection system such as lightning rod pins as well as copper strips were stolen from the second floor of the hospital, where the engine room is located. The suspect's movements were recorded by the closed circuit surveillance.

It was around 05:30 yesterday morning, when the person in charge of the hospital received a notification on his mobile phone about suspicious movement on the second floor. Through the app, he saw the suspect remove components from the lightning protection system. He immediately informed a colleague who was on duty, who managed to locate the license plates of the vehicle used by the perpetrator.

The investigations revealed that the vehicle belonged to the suspect's father, however, it was driven exclusively by the 22-year-old. In an inspection carried out on the second floor of the hospital, it was found that 35 meters of copper tape, 3 joints and 7 lightning rod pins had been stolen. The total value of the stolen goods amounts to €1,576.

After the complaint to the authorities, an arrest warrant was issued against the 22-year-old, who was arrested at noon of the same day at the Polemidia Police Station. During the search of his vehicle, a receipt from a recycling company, dated 22/09/2025, was found for 15 kilograms of copper.

According to the same information on our website, when interrogated, the young man confessed that he had stolen 15 kilos of copper tapes, property of the Limassol Hospital, which he then sold. As for the lightning rod spikes, he claimed that he sold them to a girl for the amount of €18.

Yesterday, the 22-year-old was brought before the Limassol District Court, which ordered his detention for a period of three days. Statements are expected to be taken from various persons in the case.

The case of sexual harassment of a convict of the Central Prison will be registered before the Court after the Police have completed their investigations and recommend the filing of criminal charges against two persons.

At the same time, the Commissioner for Administration, who investigated the whole issue ex officio, prepared a report in which she will record questions that arise around the case with findings and observations. Information from "F" states that the investigations of the Nicosia Police Department have almost been completed and today or tomorrow the case file will be forwarded to the Legal Service for instructions.

Due to the nature of the case, the events surrounding it and other testimonies, the recommendation of the investigators is that the case be brought before a Court. Nothing has been leaked about the Police investigations and the case, due to its sensitive details, was kept away from the public eye.

The interrogations covered people inside and outside prisons and a statement was also taken from the complainant. However, as it appears from our information, the initial complaint to the Police was made by relatives of the prisoner who reacted when they were informed by him about the incident, since it was also recorded in a video that was circulated in the prisons. Efforts were made by the investigators to locate the video that reportedly recorded the sexual abuse, but it was not located, since the convict who took it seems to have 'mislaid' the mobile phone, which despite the investigations was not located.

Statements were also taken from the prison staff who became aware of the incident as well as the medical staff. The sexual harassment happened in the prisoner's cell in the presence of two or more people and was even allegedly recorded on video from a mobile phone. After the incident, the prisoner was moved out of the Central Prison for security reasons, since he had previously been beaten by his fellow inmates.

The Police carried out examinations inside the prisoner's cell and summoned the two convicts for questioning, one of whom has since been released. The closed circuit surveillance operating in the wing where the harassment allegedly occurred was also examined. The entire incident is being evaluated and along with the testimonies will be studied by legal officers before decisions are made.

In the meantime, information tells us that last Friday, the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights, Maria Stylianou Lottides, visited the convict in question in the area outside the prison where he is being held. He had a conversation with him about the incident and the conditions of his detention before moving to the place where he is now. The visit took place because the Commissioner was not, as we are informed, satisfied with the response given by the prison management to her letter for information. The prisons, citing the police investigation as well as its sensitive issue, did not give details about the case, as a result of which the Commissioner rushed to the detention center and met the prisoner, in order to ascertain the actions taken before and after the incident, on behalf of the prisons.

The prisoner referred to the movements he received when something happened in prisons in order to ensure his safety and at no stage of the meeting, did he express any complaints against the prison management, which acted to protect him whenever there was an issue of threats from prisoners. Regarding the incident, the issue was not discussed since it is the subject of a police investigation. In her report, the Commissioner will raise some questions about the actions that the prisons did or did not take around this prisoner and the treatment in general that he received.
