COMMITTEE ON THE ENVIRONMENT - PENALTIES FOR ILLEGAL FIREWORKS TO BE TIGHTENED

 Filenews 25 September 2025

The Parliamentary Committee on the Environment examined on Wednesday the Government's bill concerning "the improvement of the legislative framework and the tightening of penalties for illegal fireworks".

After the session, the President of the Committee, Charalambos Theopemptou, stated that "he transfers the responsibility of supervising the use of  fireworks to the Police, which operates 24 hours and we can hope for immediate action". He also stressed: "There are problems but it is important for the person who commits the illegalities to know that at the moment the fine has increased and the Police can receive it. You will get the license to have fireworks from the Mining Service as always... It is a matter of having a deterrent penalty and that there will be an immediate reaction."

DISY MP, Prodromos Alambritis, noted: "The illegal and dangerous uncontrolled use of fireworks afflicts people, animals but also poses huge risks to the natural environment from causing fires." He added that the bill "moves in the right direction as it increases the penalties for violators, grants power to the Chief of Police to proceed with inspections, transfers responsibility not only to the perpetrator but also to the owner of the venue or to the organizer of the event where the illegal throw takes place".

"We believe that with the framework, this impermissible situation of illegal fireworks can finally be controlled and improved," he added.

DIKO Member of Parliament, Christos Orphanides, underlined: "The problem is causing disruption throughout Cyprus with the uncontrolled use of fireworks". As he said, "with the bill we are fighting illegality and resurrection in many areas of Cyprus, with the risk, many times, of the explosion of fires... These penalties will increase tenfold from the existing penalties that exist," referring to the need for stricter control of organizers and those who have venues for events.
