The Cybercrime Sub-Directorate warns the public about the dissemination of misleading publications on Social Media and Websites, which exploit human sensitivity towards the recent devastating fires, with the aim of deceiving and financially exploiting unsuspecting users. Specifically, unknown perpetrators are circulating false stories on social networking pages, about people who allegedly lost everything from the fires and managed to raise large sums of money through “miraculous” applications or online gambling. These publications are accompanied by misleading hyperlinks, with the aim of attracting citizens to register, deposit money or provide personal and banking information.
