Filenews 31 August 2025
7 September, the phenomenon of a total lunar eclipse will occur, which will be visible from all over Cyprus. The entrance to the Earth's shadow begins at 19:26 while the total eclipse begins at 20:30.
The elements of the eclipse are as follows:
Entry into the shadow at 18:26
Entry into the shadow of the Earth begins at 19:26
Total Eclipse begins at 20:30
Maximum of the eclipse at 21:11
Exit from the shadow at 22:56
Exit from the shadow at 23:56
The Moon will rise at 19:10
It is noted that the phenomenon starts at 18:26, when the Moon enters the Earth's shadow, but practically from Cyprus the phenomenon will begin to be visible and perceived after 19:26 when the Moon will begin to enter the Earth's shadow and the sun will have set.

An eclipse of a celestial body occurs when a third body interferes between two other bodies, resulting in the two bodies not having visual contact. In this case, the "triplet" of this system consists of the Sun, the Earth and the Moon, and the alternations between the three cause the Solar and Lunar eclipses combined with the most shocking "coincidence" of our Solar System. The coincidence is that the apparent diameter of the Moon and the Sun as seen by an Earth observer is almost the same.

During a lunar eclipse the Earth intervenes between the Moon and the Sun and thus hides the Sun from the Moon. During the eclipse the Moon does not become invisible, as it does with the Sun during solar eclipses, because the Earth refracts and scatters the solar radiation intensely and thus indirectly the Moon is visible and not directly from the Sun.

As a result, when the Moon enters the Earth's shadow, the Moon begins to turn red, instead of becoming invisible for the reason mentioned above. There will also be a full moon, since it is always a prerequisite for an eclipse.

*The Faka Tutorial Observatory in collaboration with the Cyprus Astronomical Society invites you to observe the phenomenon, through observation from a telescope, at the Faka Tutorial Observatory at 78 Larnakos Avenue, 1046, Nicosia, arrival time 20:00. The event will last until 23:00. Guests will also have the opportunity to see planets through telescopes.
